About

Geographical Characteristics and Landscape

Topographically, Berhala Island has unique characteristics compared to other islands on the North Sumatra coast. The island is dominated by hills covered with dense forest vegetation. One of the most prominent features is the presence of giant volcanic and granite rocks scattered along the coastline. These large rocks not only function as natural wave breakers but also create a dramatic visual aesthetic, especially during sunrise and sunset.

The beaches of Berhala Island have fine white sand with sea water gradients ranging from turquoise green to deep blue. The clarity of the water around the island allows visitors to see the seabed up to several meters deep with the naked eye. In the center of the island, a tall lighthouse stands firmly on a hill, providing a 360-degree viewpoint to enjoy the vast horizon of the Strait of Malacca.

Biodiversity Richness and Unique Ecosystem

Berhala Island is not just a recreational destination but also a very important conservation area. One of the main attractions from a biodiversity perspective is the island's role as a stopover and nesting site for Green Turtles (Chelonia mydas) and Hawksbill Turtles (Eretmochelys imbricata). On certain nights, lucky visitors may witness the process of turtles landing on the beach to lay their eggs in the sand.

Besides marine fauna, the forest ecosystem within the island is inhabited by various types of migratory birds and local fauna such as monitor lizards and various small reptiles. Beneath the water's surface, the coral reefs around Berhala Island are still in relatively good condition. There are various types of hard corals and soft corals that are home to colorful reef fish, such as clownfish, parrotfish, and the rare giant clam.

Outdoor Activities and Tourist Experience

For visitors, Berhala Island offers various activities that bring you closer to nature:

1. Snorkeling and Diving: The clarity of the water makes it an ideal location to explore the underwater gardens. Diving spots around the island offer dense coral reef views with excellent visibility.

2. Lighthouse Hill Trekking: To reach the highest peak, visitors must climb hundreds of steps that cut through the forest. Although tiring, the view from the top of the lighthouse is an unforgettable experience, where the entire silhouette of the island is seen surrounded by the blue sea.

3. Turtle Observation: Visitors can learn about turtle conservation through the guard posts on the island. During hatching season, hatchlings (baby turtles) are sometimes released into the open sea.

4. Island Hopping: Around Berhala Island, there are other small islands such as Sokong Nenek Island. When the tide is low, visitors can sometimes walk or use small boats to explore the rock formations on these satellite islands.

Best Time to Visit

Given its location in the Strait of Malacca, weather conditions greatly affect accessibility and comfort. The best time to visit Berhala Island is between March and September. During this period, the sea tends to be calm with small waves, making sea travel safer and the seawater much clearer for underwater activities.

Avoid visiting between October and January as it is the west monsoon season, which often brings large waves and heavy rain, potentially causing ferry schedules to be canceled for safety reasons.

Conservation Status and Environmental Protection

Berhala Island is a strictly protected area, not only due to its status as an outermost island with a military base post (Marines) but also as an animal protection area. Conservation efforts are focused on protecting turtle habitats from natural predators and destructive human activities.

Visitors are strictly prohibited from taking anything from the island, including sand, coral, or shells. Waste management is also a major concern; every tourist is urged to bring their waste back to the mainland to maintain the integrity of this limited island ecosystem.

Accessibility and Facilities

Reaching Berhala Island requires careful planning. The main departure point is usually from Tanjung Beringin Port in Serdang Bedagai Regency. The journey by modified fishing boat or speedboat takes about 3 to 4 hours, depending on weather conditions and the type of boat engine.

Facilities on the island are still very limited and basic, which adds to the "private island" adventure feel. There are several accommodations in the form of simple dormitories or wooden huts managed by local tour providers or local security personnel. Electricity is usually only available at night using a generator. There are no large commercial stalls or restaurants, so visitors are advised to bring sufficient supplies or use tour packages that include meals.

Conclusion for Tourists

Berhala Island is a destination for those who appreciate natural authenticity over luxurious facilities. The combination of majestic granite rocks, crystal-clear sea water, and the presence of rare turtles makes this island an unparalleled maritime gem of North Sumatra. By maintaining environmentally conscious behavior, a visit to Berhala Island will provide a profound spiritual and physical experience of Indonesia's natural wealth.
