The Grandeur of Malay Glory: History and Existence of the Sultan Serdang Palace Replica

Serdang Bedagai Regency, nicknamed "Tanah Bertuah Negeri Beradat" (Land of Blessing, Realm of Tradition), holds one of North Sumatra's most precious architectural and historical gems: the Sultan Serdang Palace Replica. Standing proudly in Melati Kebun Village, Pegajahan District, this building is not just an ordinary wooden construction, but a symbol of the resurgence of the Serdang Sultanate's identity, which was once devastated by past historical upheavals.

Historical Origins and the Founding of the Serdang Sultanate

To understand the significance of this replica's existence, we must look back to the 18th century. The Serdang Sultanate was established as a result of political dynamics within the Deli Sultanate. Following the death of Tuanku Panglima Paderap (the 3rd Sultan of Deli) in 1723, a succession dispute arose among his sons. Tuanku Umar, the eldest son, who was supposed to inherit the throne, was sidelined by power intrigues. He then established a new territory downstream of the Serdang River, which later developed into the sovereign Serdang Sultanate in 1723.

The original palace, known as Istana Darul Aman, was once located in Perbaungan. Unfortunately, this palace, which served as the center of Serdang Malay governance and culture, was completely destroyed during the Social Revolution in East Sumatra in 1946. This bloody tragedy annihilated many historical buildings of the sultanates in North Sumatra. The replica standing today is a monumental effort by the Serdang Bedagai Regency Government and the Sultanate's heir family to bring back this collective memory for future generations.

Architecture: Harmony of Malay Aesthetics and Symbolism

The Sultan Serdang Palace Replica is built adhering to the strong traditional Malay Deli-Serdang architectural style. Its structure is a stilt house, a clever adaptation to the tropical climate and the swampy environment of East Sumatra. The dominant golden-yellow color, combined with green and red accents, is not merely an aesthetic choice but carries symbolism of caste and honor in Malay tradition; yellow symbolizes the sultan's nobility, green symbolizes adherence to Islam, and red symbolizes bravery.

The main construction uses durable, selected wood. The roof is in the pandan fold style with "Pucuk Rebung" (bamboo shoot) ornamentation at its peak, symbolizing hope for growth and benefit to others. Large windows surrounding the building are designed for maximum air circulation, while floral motif carvings—such as the tanjung flower and vine patterns—adorn every corner of the pillars and verandas, showcasing the refined character of the Serdang people.

Historical Significance and Key Events

This replica serves as a reminder of the golden age of Sultan Sulaiman Syariful Alamsyah (reigned 1879-1946), a Sultan of Serdang known as a visionary and intellectual figure. Under his leadership, Serdang became a highly advanced center for tobacco and rubber plantations in East Sumatra. He was also known as a patron of Malay arts and literature.

One unique historical fact associated with the Serdang Sultanate is its tenacious diplomatic resistance against the Dutch colonialists. Unlike some other regions that submitted completely, the Sultan of Serdang often employed arduous negotiation strategies to defend the sovereignty of his ancestral lands. This palace replica now functions as a museum housing various artifacts, historical documentation photos, and royal genealogies that explain how Serdang was once a key player in global trade in the Strait of Malaka.

Central Figures

Besides Tuanku Umar as the founder, Sultan Basharuddin Syaiful Alamsyah and Sultan Sulaiman Syariful Alamsyah are the figures most often associated with the glory of this building. Sultan Sulaiman, in particular, is revered for his efforts to modernize the sultanate's administration without abandoning its Islamic and Malay cultural roots. The existence of this replica is also strongly supported by his descendants, such as Tuanku Lukman Sinar Basarshah II, a prominent Malay historian and culturalist, to ensure every detail of the replica is close to its original historical accuracy.

Preservation, Restoration, and Current Status

The construction of this replica began in 2012 and was inaugurated as a cultural center. The Serdang Bedagai Regency Government pays special attention to the maintenance of this building as a premier historical tourist attraction. Although it is a replica, its sacred value is preserved. Periodic renovations are carried out on the roof and repainting to ensure the wood does not decay with age.

The area around the palace has also been developed into an integrated cultural complex. There is an open stage that is often used for performances of the Serampang Dua Belas dance—a traditional dance created by Sauti, an artist from Serdang whose work has become a national intangible cultural heritage.

Cultural and Religious Importance

For the people of Serdang Bedagai, this palace is the "Great House" for their identity. Religiously, this palace reflects the philosophy of Adat Bersendi Syarak, Syarak Bersendi Kitabullah (Custom is based on Sharia, Sharia is based on the Book of Allah). This is evident in the palace's layout, which always provides a special space for worship and meetings of religious scholars. The Serdang Sultanate in the past was a major supporter of Islamic propagation in the east coast region of Sumatra.

The Sultan Serdang Palace Replica is more than just a photo opportunity tourist spot. It is a statement that history should not die simply because its physical structure was once destroyed. By visiting this site, visitors are invited to delve into the maritime glory, the political policies of past sultans, and the beauty of Malay aesthetics that remain relevant to this day. Its existence serves as a bridge between a glorious past and a future rooted in noble traditional values.
