The Arfak Mountains area has been designated as a Nature Reserve by the Indonesian government. This status aims to protect the unique ecosystem and endemic species from the threats of poaching and land clearing.

Local communities play a key role in this conservation through a local wisdom system called "Igya Ser Hanjop," a concept of nature management that divides the area into a core zone that must not be disturbed and a limited utilization zone. Tourists are expected to adhere to strict rules, such as not taking any flora, bringing back plastic waste, and always using local guides as a form of support for conservation-based economy.

Accessibility and Facilities

Reaching Arfak Mountains Peak requires meticulous planning. The main gateway is Manokwari City. From Manokwari, visitors must use a four-wheel-drive (4WD) vehicle for a land journey of 3 to 5 hours to Anggi District or villages at the foot of the mountain like Mokwam Village.

Facilities around the peak area are still very limited and eco-tourism oriented. Tourists usually stay in simple homestays owned by local residents or set up tents at designated camping spots. There are no luxury hotels here; the luxury offered is the authenticity of nature and the warmth of the local people. It is recommended for visitors to bring complete hiking gear, personal medication, and sufficient supplies.
