History of Balangan Regency: A Jewel of South Kalimantan's Interior
Origins and Royal Era
Balangan Regency, with an area of 1,836.49 km², was historically an integral part of the Banjar Sultanate. The name "Balangan" is believed to originate from the local language, referring to the geographical condition of small rivers crisscrossing its territory. Located in the central (inland) part of South Kalimantan and lacking a coastline, this region was formerly part of the Balangan District led by a Kiai (district head). Geopolitically, Balangan borders six administrative regions, making it a strategic meeting point for forest products and spice trade in the past.
Colonial Era and People's Resistance
During the Dutch colonial period, Balangan became an important battleground in the Banjar War (1859–1905). Legendary figures like Tumenggung Jalil led fierce resistance against colonial forces. One of the heroic events recorded was the defense at Tundakan Fortress in 1861. Tumenggung Jalil, along with the people of Balangan, managed to trouble the Dutch soldiers before he ultimately fell as a hero. Traces of colonialism are also evident in the exploitation of natural resources, where the Dutch began mapping coal potential and rubber plantations, which remain the backbone of the region's economy to this day.
Struggle for Independence and Regency Formation
After the proclamation of independence in 1945, the spirit of independence in Balangan flared through guerrilla activities in the Meratus forests. However, Balangan's most significant modern history began in the late 20th century. For decades, Balangan was part of Hulu Sungai Utara (HSU) Regency. The community's aspiration for self-governance peaked in the 2000s. Through the long struggle of the Preparation Committee for the Formation of Balangan Regency (PPPKB), this region officially separated based on Law Number 2 of 2003, dated February 25, 2003. Paringin was designated as the regency capital, marking a new chapter of regional autonomy.
Cultural Heritage and Local Traditions
Balangan's historical wealth is reflected in the culture of the Dayak Pitap and Banjar Malay communities. The Aruh Adat tradition, practiced by the Dayak people on the slopes of the Meratus Mountains, is a form of thanksgiving for the harvest, passed down through generations. Additionally, there is the historical site of the Tomb of Datuk Kandang Haji in Paringin Timur Village, a great Islamic scholar who played a crucial role in spreading Islam in the inland areas of Kalimantan in the 17th century. The presence of this tomb is evidence of the strong cultural syncretism and religiosity in Balangan.
Modern Development and Identity
Today, Balangan is transforming into a rapidly developing industrial and agricultural region. As a region surrounded by Tabalong Regency, Hulu Sungai Tengah, Hulu Sungai Utara, and bordering East Kalimantan and Central Kalimantan Provinces, Balangan plays a key role in inter-provincial connectivity. Although modernization through the coal mining sector dominates, the local government continues to preserve the People's Struggle Monument and maintain the integrity of the Meratus forests as the lungs of South Kalimantan. Balangan is not merely an administrative region but a symbol of the resilience of its inland people in safeguarding the sovereignty and cultural identity of the Banjar-Dayak people in the heart of Kalimantan.
