About

Design Philosophy and Visual Characteristics

Visually, Siger Tower is dominated by the shape of the traditional Lampung bride's crown, known as "Siger." The architecture of this building adopts the crown's form with nine tiers (sections) soaring towards the sky. These nine tiers are not merely aesthetic elements but represent the nine indigenous languages or dialects present in Lampung society, also symbolizing harmony among these sub-ethnic groups.

The dominant colors of the building's exterior are golden yellow and red, reflecting luxury and bravery—colors that are sacred in Lampung's Tapis fabric. The design employs a metaphorical architectural approach, where the building's physical form directly draws analogy from the most revered cultural object. The dynamic curved lines at the top of the tower create an iconic silhouette, making it an unavoidable point of interest for anyone disembarking from a ferry at Bakauheni Port.

Historical Context and Development

The construction of Siger Tower was initiated by the then Governor of Lampung, Sjachroedin Z.P. The project began in 2005 and was inaugurated on April 30, 2008. Its location on Gamping Hill holds extraordinary geographical significance, situated at an altitude of approximately 110 meters above sea level. This location choice ensures that Siger Tower can be seen from a great distance, even from the middle of the Sunda Strait.

Technically, the construction of this tower presented a unique civil engineering challenge due to its location on steep, hilly terrain. The building's structure is designed to withstand earthquake tremors, considering Lampung's active seismic zone. The use of reinforced concrete combined with a steel frame for the crown ensures the building's stability without compromising the intricate ornamental details.

Structural Innovation and Architectural Details

One of the prominent innovations at Siger Tower is the use of ferrocement techniques. The architect, Ir. Hi. Anshori Djausal, M.T., who designed the building, utilized a construction method that allows for the precise formation of complex curves on the Siger crown while maintaining a relatively light weight compared to conventional concrete.

The building has six floors, each with a specific function. Structurally, the tower does not feature many internal partitions in its main areas, creating a sense of spaciousness and allowing for good natural ventilation, which is crucial given the hot coastal tropical climate. At the summit, there is an open viewing area that allows visitors to enjoy a 360-degree panorama encompassing Bakauheni Port, the Sunda Strait, and the surrounding cluster of small islands.

Cultural and Social Significance

Siger Tower symbolizes the "Zero Point" of Sumatra in its southern part. Sociologically, this tower serves as a symbol of pride for the people of Lampung (Siger Lampung). In traditional culture, the Siger is an honor for women; thus, architecturally, this tower positions Lampung as a "mother" figure welcoming her children or guests arriving from across the sea.

Furthermore, the presence of this tower functions to unite two pillars of Lampung society: the Saibatin community and the Pepadun community. The nine peaks on the tower's crown serve as a reminder of unity in diversity of dialects and customs. Around the tower area, reliefs often display local legends and the history of Islam's spread, as well as the influx of other cultural influences in Lampung, making it an open-air museum for historical education.

Visitor Experience and Space Utilization

Currently, Siger Tower functions as a destination for religious, cultural, and educational tourism. Visitors arriving will pass through an uphill road offering views of the gradations of color in the Sunda Strait waters. Inside the tower complex, there are spaces used for exhibitions of local handicrafts, such as Tapis fabric and Lampung coffee, supporting the local community's creative economy.

The spatial experience within Siger Tower is designed to take visitors on a transition, from the hustle and bustle of the port to tranquility at a height. The upper floors are often used as observation points for ship traffic, while the lower courtyard areas frequently serve as public spaces for regional art events. Uniquely, this area also features geographical coordinate markers that often become photo opportunities for tourists as proof of having set foot on the southern tip of Sumatra.

The Role of Architect Ir. Anshori Djausal

The visual success of Siger Tower is inseparable from the skillful work of Ir. Anshori Djausal. As an academic and practitioner, he successfully translated abstract traditional values into concrete geometric forms. He did not just design a building; he created a "landmark" with a soul (sense of place). His approach, integrating modern civil engineering techniques with traditional aesthetics, makes it one of the best contemporary architectural works in Eastern Indonesia and Sumatra.

Conclusion

Siger Tower is an architectural achievement that transcends its basic function as a viewing tower. It is a meeting point between modern construction technology and centuries-old local wisdom. With its magnificent form and strategic location, Siger Tower will continue to stand as the guardian of Sumatra's gateway, welcoming every soul that arrives with the timeless grandeur of Lampung's culture. This tower proves that architecture can be the most powerful visual communication tool to convey a nation's identity to the world.
