History and Development of West Bandung Regency

Origins and Colonial Era

West Bandung Regency (KBB) has deep historical roots, beginning with the formation of administrative areas in West Java. Historically, this region was an integral part of Bandung Regency. During the Dutch colonial era, the area that is now West Bandung, particularly Lembang and Padalarang, played a strategic role. Lembang was developed by the Dutch East Indies government as a sanatorium area and botanical research center due to its cool air. One of the important historical milestones was the establishment of the Bosscha Observatory in 1923 by the Nederlandsch-Indische Sterrenkundige Vereeniging (Dutch East Indies Astronomical Association) on the initiative of Karel Albert Rudolf Bosscha. The existence of the oldest observatory in Indonesia placed West Bandung on the international science map from the early 20th century.

Era of Independence and People's Struggle

During the physical revolution to defend Indonesian independence, the West Bandung region became a battlefield. The "Bandung Lautan Api" (Bandung Sea of Fire) event in March 1946 had a significant impact on the surrounding areas. Many fighters retreated south and west to strategize for guerrilla warfare. In Padalarang, the first paper mill in Indonesia (Padalarang Paper Mill, established in 1922) bore silent witness to the struggle for economic assets between local fighters and NICA troops. Local leaders, along with the community, worked hand in hand to defend the region from military aggression, which later solidified the patriotic identity of the West Bandung people.

Expansion and Regional Autonomy

The most crucial moment in the modern history of West Bandung was its expansion from Bandung Regency. This movement was pioneered by the Committee for the Formation of West Bandung Regency (KPKBB), chaired by Endang Anwar. After a long struggle, West Bandung Regency officially became an autonomous region on January 2, 2007, based on Law Number 12 of 2007. With an area of 1,289.86 km², this regency, located in the central part of West Java, borders seven administrative regions, including Purwakarta Regency, Subang Regency, and Cianjur Regency. Ngamprah was then designated as the new center of government.

Cultural Heritage and Local Identity

Culturally, West Bandung is a strong bastion of Sundanese tradition. Traditional arts such as Tarawangsa in the Cibalong area and Reog are still preserved. Its people highly uphold the philosophy of Silih Asah, Silih Asih, Silih Asuh (mutual learning, mutual compassion, mutual care). Furthermore, the Gunung Putri Site and traces of the ancient Bandung Lake in Stone Garden Citatah provide a unique prehistoric historical dimension, connecting ancient geology with early human civilization in the Pasundan land.

Modern Development and Future

Today, West Bandung has transformed into a new economic growth center in West Java. The presence of strategic infrastructure such as Saguling Dam, built in the 1980s as a power supplier for Java-Bali, and the Jakarta-Bandung high-speed train line with a station in Padalarang, underscores the vital role of this region. Although it does not have a coastline, its rich mountain natural resources and industrial innovations make West Bandung an important pillar in Indonesia's history and future.
