Taman Nasional Berbak dan Sembilang (TNBS) is a natural masterpiece located on the East Coast of Sumatra Island. Administratively, the Sembilang area is in Banyuasin Regency, South Sumatra Province, while the Berbak area is in Jambi Province. The merger of these two areas through a Ministerial Decree in 2016 made it one of the most crucial wetland conservation areas in the world, now recognized as a Ramsar Site and a UNESCO World Biosphere Reserve.

Best Time to Visit

The time of visit greatly determines the experience one will have in TNBS. To witness the migratory bird phenomenon at its fullest, the best time is between October and March. The peak of migration usually occurs in November and December.

If the main goal is to navigate the rivers and enjoy the clarity of the ecosystem without heavy rain, June to August (dry season) is the right choice. However, it should be noted that as a wetland area, the humidity here is always high throughout the year.

As a Ramsar Site, Berbak and Sembilang National Park bears international responsibility in preserving wetlands. The main challenges faced are forest encroachment, peatland fires, and illegal hunting. This includes prohibiting the disposal of waste in the waters, not disturbing wildlife with loud noises, and following the paths designated by national park officers. Accessibility and Facilities

Reaching Berbak and Sembilang National Park requires careful planning. The main entrance from the South Sumatra side is through Palembang City. From Palembang, the journey continues to the port in the Sungsang area, Banyuasin Regency, by land vehicle for approximately 2 hours.

From Sungsang, the journey can only continue by water transportation such as speedboats or ketek boats for 1.5 to 3 hours, depending on the destination within the national park. Facilities within the area are still limited to forest guard posts and a few simple guesthouses at the information center. It is highly recommended for visitors to bring sufficient provisions, personal medications, and use the services of local guides or national park officers for safety and comfort during exploration.
