Ironically, at a time when the company built luxurious facilities for its employees, the school for the children of tin miners and the poor stood in a deplorable condition.

The original school had long collapsed due to age, but its spirit was revived through the construction of this replica in 2008. The initiative to build the replica was triggered by the immense success of Andrea Hirata's novel Laskar Pelangi and its film adaptation directed by Riri Riza. The replica was built precisely in a similar location to its original condition, atop a barren sand dune, to provide an authentic depiction of the struggle of ten students (Laskar Pelangi) and their two loyal teachers in defending their right to learn.

The architecture of Replika SD Muhammadiyah Gantong was designed to replicate "dignified poverty." The building's structure is a stark contrast to modern school standards. The building uses local wood materials intentionally made to appear aged and porous. Its walls consist of loosely spaced wooden planks, creating gaps that allow wind and dust to enter the classroom.

The most iconic characteristic of this site is the use of slanted support pillars. These wooden supports are not merely decorative but are a replication of the original school's near-collapse condition. The roof is made of rusted tin, which in its original history, often leaked during heavy rains that swept Belitung. Inside the classroom, there are rough, long wooden benches and a blackboard that still uses chalk. The entire construction reflects the aesthetic of educational infrastructure backwardness in remote areas at that time.

This site is important because it documents the difficult period of education in East Belitung. Historically, SD Muhammadiyah Gantong was the only hope for children of the "PN Maskapai" group (a local term for low-level tin laborers) to break free from the chains of poverty.

The minimum requirement of ten students became a real historical drama, where the presence of Harun, a child with special needs, became the school's savior from dissolution. This event reflects the rigid formal education policies of the past that often did not favor community schools in remote parts of the archipelago.

Foundation reinforcement is done discreetly to avoid damaging the original building's visual appeal. The environment around the replica is also maintained to remain a vast expanse of white sand, reflecting the original topography of the former tin mining land that serves as the school's backdrop.

Additionally, large trees around the replica were intentionally left to illustrate how nature was part of the students' classroom at that time, where they often studied under trees if the temperature inside the tin-roofed classroom became too hot.
