About
Description of Landscape and Main Natural Features
Lut Atas is a volcanic lake situated on a hilltop in Kampung Waq Pondok Sayur, Bukit Sub-district. The most striking natural feature of this destination is the blend of a calm lake surface with a backdrop of dense pine forests (Pinus merkusii) and green mountainous vegetation.
Unlike Lake Laut Tawar in Takengon, which is vast and located in a valley, Lut Atas offers a more intimate and isolated atmosphere. Its water surface is often covered by a thin mist in the morning and evening, creating a mystical and serene ambiance. The terrain surrounding the lake is hilly, providing gradations of green that contrast with the clean blue sky of the Gayo highlands, free from pollution.
Unique Ecosystem and Biodiversity
Located within the connected Leuser ecosystem area, Lut Atas boasts extraordinary biodiversity. The forests surrounding the lake are home to various endemic Sumatran bird species and other wildlife. Lucky visitors can often hear the calls of Siamangs (Symphalangus syndactylus) from a distance.
The vegetation around the lake is dominated by forest ferns, lichens that indicate very clean air quality, and various species of wild orchids growing on old tree trunks. Its aquatic ecosystem is also unique; despite its high altitude, the lake is home to several local freshwater fish species that serve as indicators of the health of the mountain water environment.
Outdoor Activities and Tourist Experience
Lut Atas is not just a place to be seen, but also offers various exploration experiences for nature lovers:
1. Light Hiking and Trekking: The paths leading to the pier and viewpoint have been well-maintained, allowing tourists to take a leisurely stroll while breathing in the fresh scent of the pine forest.
2. Nature Photography: The wooden pier jutting into the middle of the lake is a favorite spot for photographers. The reflection of the sky on the calm lake surface (mirror effect) provides dramatic photo results.
3. Camping: The management provides a special area for those who want to experience sleeping at high altitudes. The experience of seeing the Milky Way on a clear night and waking up amidst the fog is the main attraction of camping here.
4. Enjoying Gayo Coffee at Altitude: It's incomplete to visit Bener Meriah without sipping coffee. Around the parking area and entrance, there are several local stalls serving fresh Arabica coffee, providing warmth amidst temperatures that can reach 15 degrees Celsius.
Best Time to Visit
The best time to visit Lut Atas is during the dry season, between June and September. During this period, the sky tends to be clear with less dense fog, allowing the views of the lake and surrounding forests to be seen very clearly.
If you are chasing the sunrise moment, it is recommended to be at the location by 05:30 WIB. The sunlight filtering through the pine trees and reflecting on the lake water creates an unforgettable scene. However, for those who prefer a cold and foggy atmosphere, October to December offers a "colder" and more challenging experience.
Conservation Status and Environmental Protection
Lut Atas is under the supervision of the Bener Meriah local government with active involvement from the local community through the Tourism Awareness Group (Pokdarwis). Given its location within a protected forest area, ecotourism principles are strictly applied here.
Tourists are strictly prohibited from littering, damaging vegetation, or disturbing wildlife. Single-use plastics are highly restricted, and hikers or campers are required to bring their trash back down. These conservation efforts aim to ensure that the lake's water sources remain preserved and the forest ecosystem remains intact as a life support system for the communities below.
Accessibility and Supporting Facilities
Access to Lut Atas is now much better compared to a few years ago. From the center of Redelong town (the capital of Bener Meriah), the journey takes about 30 to 45 minutes by motorized vehicle. The road to the location is mostly paved, although there are quite steep and winding inclines, typical of mountainous regions.
Facilities available at the location include:
- Parking Area: Sufficient parking space is available for two-wheeled and four-wheeled vehicles.
- Footpaths: Wooden and concrete stairs and paths to facilitate access to the lake's edge.
- Gazebos and Park Benches: Resting places for visitors while enjoying the view.
- Toilets and Prayer Rooms: Standard facilities maintained for cleanliness for tourist convenience.
- Wooden Pier: An iconic structure that serves as the main landmark of Lut Atas.
Lut Atas is a perfect representation of Aceh's hidden beauty. It offers tranquility far from the hustle and bustle of the city, air that rejuvenates the lungs, and natural panoramas that delight the eyes. For anyone visiting the Gayo Highlands, ascending to Lut Atas is a must to complete a spiritual and physical journey in the cool land of Bener Meriah.
