About
Characteristics of the Waters and Cliff Landscape
Despite bearing the name "Sungai" (River), this tourist attraction is actually a coastal area. The name "Sungai Suci" refers to a small river estuary whose waters merge with the sea in this area. The main characteristic of Sungai Suci is its sedimentary rock cliff walls that stand perpendicular to the open sea.
Unlike beaches on the northern or southern sides of Bengkulu, which are generally flat with white sand, Sungai Suci presents a view of cliffs naturally eroded by centuries of wave impact. This erosion has created artistic coral crevices and small islands (islets) separated from the mainland. The soil structure here is dominated by hard rocks and gravel, giving a golden-brown color that contrasts with the deep blue of the Indian Ocean waters.
Coastal Ecosystem and Biodiversity
The ecosystem at Sungai Suci is a combination of estuary and rocky beach ecosystems. Around the river estuary, visitors can still find typical coastal vegetation such as ketapang trees (Terminalia catappa) and rows of coconut trees that function as natural windbreaks.
In terms of fauna, this area is a stopover for various types of seabirds. If lucky, at certain times, visitors can observe bird migrations seeking food among the corals during low tide. Beneath the water's surface, despite the strong currents, there is a local coral reef ecosystem that is home to various types of shells and stone crabs often traditionally hunted by local fishermen.
Unique Experience: Extreme Suspension Bridge
One feature that distinguishes Sungai Suci from other natural destinations in Bengkulu is the presence of a twin suspension bridge. This bridge connects the mainland to a small coral island separated by erosion.
Walking across this suspension bridge offers a unique adrenaline rush. Made from woven rope and simple wooden planks, visitors will feel the bridge sway as the sea breeze blows strongly, while below, large waves crash against the coral base with a thunderous sound. This experience becomes the main attraction for adventure seekers who want to witness the power of the Indian Ocean up close.
Outdoor Activities and Nature Photography
Sungai Suci is a paradise for landscape photographers. The golden hour moments here are considered among the best in Bengkulu. Due to its position facing directly west, the sunset at Sungai Suci creates a very photogenic silhouette of the cliffs and suspension bridge.
Besides photography, other popular activities include:
1. Coral Exploration: During low tide, visitors can descend to the area below the cliffs to get a closer look at the rock structures and marine life trapped in small tide pools.
2. Cliff Fishing: Many locals and tourists indulge in their fishing hobby from high cliffs, targeting aggressive reef fish.
3. Family Picnics: The relatively flat area above the cliffs, covered with grass, is a favorite spot for laying out mats while enjoying the sea breeze.
Best Visiting Time and Seasonal Variations
To get the maximum experience, the best time to visit Sungai Suci is during the dry season, between May and September. During this period, the sky is usually clear without clouds, so the sunset view is unobstructed.
Technically, the best time of day is from 4:00 PM to 6:30 PM Western Indonesian Time. However, visitors need to be aware of the west wind season (usually October to January), when waves can become very high and strong winds can make activities near the cliff edge or on the suspension bridge dangerous.
Conservation Status and Environmental Protection
As a natural tourist area vulnerable to erosion, the local government of Central Bengkulu continuously strives to implement protection measures. The main issue at Sungai Suci is the high rate of erosion each year. Some points of the cliffs have been fitted with wave breakers or artificial embankments to slow down land erosion.
Environmental awareness for visitors is highly emphasized, especially regarding the prohibition of littering into the sea or the river estuary area. The estuary ecosystem at Sungai Suci functions as a natural filter before freshwater enters the sea, so maintaining the cleanliness of the river is crucial for the preservation of biodiversity below the cliffs.
Accessibility and Supporting Facilities
Sungai Suci has an advantage in terms of its very easy accessibility. Located only about 15-20 kilometers from the center of Bengkulu City, the journey can be made in 25-30 minutes by two-wheeled or four-wheeled vehicles. The road to the location is well-paved.
The facilities at this tourist location are quite adequate, including:
- Parking Area: Spacious parking lots along the cliff edges.
- Culinary Stalls: Rows of stalls serving local specialties, especially seafood and young coconut.
- Gazebos: Resting places built on the cliff edge to enjoy the view.
- Descent Access: Concrete stairs allow visitors to descend to the beach area below the cliffs safely.
Sungai Suci is not just a tourist spot, but a natural monument that showcases the geological power of Bengkulu's land. With its blend of the visual beauty of high cliffs and the adrenaline challenge of its suspension bridge, this destination remains an iconic tourist spot that must be visited by anyone who wants to feel the authentic breath of the Indian Ocean on Sumatran soil.
