The Magical Charm of Blue Stone Beach (Penggajawa): A Turquoise Expanse on Ende's South Coast
Flores Island in East Nusa Tenggara is not only known for the majesty of Komodo or the mystery of the three-colored Kelimutu Lakes. On its southern coast, precisely in the Ende Regency, lies a unique and rare geological phenomenon known as Pantai Batu Biru, or locally called Pantai Penggajawa. Unlike typical beaches offering stretches of white or black sand, Pantai Penggajawa presents an extraordinary sight of millions of bluish-green stones covering its entire coastline.

Unique Geological Characteristics and Natural Beauty
The main attraction of Blue Stone Beach lies in the composition of its beach material. As far as the eye can see, visitors are greeted by a gradation of blue, turquoise, purple, and gray hues originating from the fine stones naturally scattered. These stones have a smooth texture and round or oval shapes due to thousands of years of abrasion by seawater.
Geologically, the presence of these stones remains a subject of awe. Local residents believe these stones originated from the seabed, washed ashore by large waves, or are the result of ancient volcanic activity around Flores, later eroded and smoothed by the strong southern sea currents. The contrast between the blue stones, the jet-black sand beneath them, and the blue waters of the Savu Sea creates a dramatic visual composition not found elsewhere in Indonesia.

Coastal Ecosystem and Landscape
Pantai Penggajawa is framed by towering limestone cliffs on one side and the crashing waves of the Indian Ocean (Savu Sea) on the other. The vegetation around the beach is dominated by resilient coastal plants and a few shady trees providing respite from the Flores sun.
Although its coastline is rocky, the waters around Penggajawa are exceptionally clear. Its underwater ecosystem is still quite well-preserved, though the currents here are quite strong, requiring high caution for snorkeling activities. The unique biodiversity here is more evident in the rock formations and the interaction between land and sea, which creates habitats for various types of beach crabs and small marine fauna hiding in the crevices of the blue stones.

Tourist Activities and Experiences
Visiting Blue Stone Beach offers a sensory experience different from simply sunbathing on a sandy beach. Here are some of the main activities you can enjoy:
1. Landscape Photography: This beach is a photographer's paradise. The blend of wet stone colors hit by waves produces a very strong blue saturation, especially when the sun is directly overhead or during the golden hour before sunset.
2. Stone Stacking: Tourists often spend time arranging these blue stones into small towers (rock balancing). The smooth yet not slippery texture of the stones when dry makes it easy for visitors to get creative.
3. Observing Traditional Stone Collectors: One of the unique sociological sights here is the activity of local residents, especially women and children, manually collecting blue stones. These stones are sorted by size and color to be exported abroad (to countries like Japan and Europe) as decorative material for gardens and buildings. Witnessing their meticulous work is a profound cultural experience.
4. Enjoying the Sunset: Due to its south-southwest facing position, Pantai Penggajawa offers spectacular sunset views, where the reddening sky contrasts with the blue expanse of the earth.

Best Time to Visit
The most ideal time to visit Blue Stone Beach is during the dry season, between May and September. During this period, Flores' skies are usually very clear, providing maximum natural lighting to highlight the blue color of the stones.
On a daily basis, it is recommended to visit in the morning before 10:00 AM or in the afternoon after 4:00 PM. Besides avoiding the scorching sun, at these times, the sunlight falls at an angle that enhances the sparkle of the wet stones. It is also important to pay attention to the sea tide; when the tide is low, the expanse of blue stones will appear wider and more stunning.

Conservation and Environmental Protection
Although stone collection is permitted as a livelihood for local residents under specific regulations, the sustainability of Pantai Penggajawa's ecosystem remains a concern. Tourists are strictly prohibited from taking blue stones as souvenirs in large quantities without permission.
Protecting the cleanliness of the beach is also a top priority. As this beach is a rare geological asset, keeping the area free from plastic waste is crucial. Awareness to not litter and to respect the boundaries of local residents' mining areas is a form of support for sustainable tourism in Ende.

Accessibility and Facilities
Blue Stone Beach (Penggajawa) is located approximately 20 kilometers west of Ende City center. The journey to the location can be made in about 30 to 45 minutes by motorized vehicle, both two-wheeled and four-wheeled. The route taken is the Trans-Flores highway, which is in good condition and paved, with beautiful coastal scenery along the way.
The facilities around the beach are still relatively simple but adequate. There are several lopo (traditional NTT huts) provided for tourists to rest. Small local warungs sell cold drinks and snacks. For visitors wishing to stay overnight, it is recommended to find accommodation in Ende City center, as there are no star hotels or large resorts available around the beach.
Pantai Batu Biru Penggajawa is not just a water tourism destination, but a natural symphony that combines geological power, visual beauty, and the pulse of local community life. Visiting this place offers a new perspective on Indonesia's boundless natural wealth, extending beyond green forests or white sands to the eternal blue of stones sculpted by time.
