About
Stunning Natural Landscape and Geography
Geographically, Situ Bagendit is situated in a valley surrounded by a range of volcanoes that encircle the Garut basin. From the lake's edge, visitors can clearly see the grandeur of Mount Guntur, Mount Cikuray, Mount Papandayan, and Mount Haruman. The combination of the vast water surface with the mountainous backdrop creates a cool and refreshing microclimate, typical of the Priangan highlands.
The lake has a significant water coverage area, reaching over 125 hectares. The water depth varies, but its clarity is maintained thanks to the supply from natural springs in the surrounding areas. The most striking characteristic of Situ Bagendit is the expanse of lotus and water hyacinth plants in some corners of the lake, which add a touch of green visual texture on the blue water surface.
Aquatic Ecosystem and Biodiversity
Situ Bagendit functions as a vital freshwater ecosystem for the northern Garut region. The biodiversity here includes various freshwater fish species such as carp, tilapia, and nilem fish, which are local commodities. Additionally, the lake is a habitat for various species of water birds that are often seen diving for food on the water surface in the morning.
The vegetation around the lake is dominated by shade trees and riparian plants that help maintain the stability of the lake's edges from erosion. This ecosystem not only serves as a tourist attraction but also as a water catchment area and a regulator of hydrological balance for the surrounding agricultural land. Lucky visitors may witness the harmonious interaction between local fauna and the activities of traditional fishermen who still use nets to catch fish.
Tourist Experience and Outdoor Activities
After undergoing extensive revitalization, Situ Bagendit now offers various integrated activity zones with nature:
1. Exploring with Traditional Rafts: The most iconic experience at Situ Bagendit is riding a bamboo raft (getek). Unlike modern boats, rafts provide a sense of closeness to the water. Visitors can cruise the middle of the lake while enjoying the gentle breeze and listening to the calm ripples of the water.
2. Modern Water Rides: For families, swan-shaped paddle boats and motorboats are available, allowing for exploration of further lake areas in a short time.
3. Amphitheater and Viewing Pier: There is a wooden pier structure that juts into the lake, ideal for enjoying the sunset reflecting on the water surface. The open-air amphitheater is often used for Sundanese cultural art performances.
4. Pedestrian and Cycling Paths: Neat pedestrian paths have been built around the lake, allowing visitors to do light exercise or cycle while breathing in the fresh mountain air.
5. Floating Culinary Tourism: Enjoying Sundanese specialties like nasi liwet or grilled fish on a moving raft is an unforgettable sensory experience.
Best Time to Visit
To get the maximum visual experience, the best time to visit Situ Bagendit is during the dry season, between May and September. During this period, the sky is usually clear, so the mountain peaks surrounding Garut are clearly visible without being covered by fog.
Morning (07:00 - 09:00) is the most ideal time for photography enthusiasts as the soft sunlight creates a perfect mirror effect on the lake's surface. Meanwhile, the afternoon (16:00 - 18:00) offers a romantic atmosphere with the degradation of orange sky colors behind the silhouette of Mount Guntur.
Conservation and Environmental Protection
As an area under government attention, Situ Bagendit is now under strict supervision regarding its environmental preservation. Conservation efforts are focused on controlling the growth of water hyacinth so that it does not cover the entire surface of the lake, which can disrupt oxygen levels in the water.
The management also implements a stricter waste management system, especially in the pier and pedestrian path areas. Visitors are encouraged to maintain cleanliness and not to throw any waste into the lake to preserve the sustainability of the local fish ecosystem and the clarity of the water, which is the main attraction of this destination.
Accessibility and Supporting Facilities
Situ Bagendit is located about 4 kilometers from the center of Garut city, making it one of the most easily accessible destinations. The road access to the location is very good and can be passed by private vehicles, tourist buses, and public transportation (angkot).
The available facilities are now very complete and modern, including:

With a blend of strong folk legends, dramatic natural beauty, and adequate modern facilities, Situ Bagendit stands tall as a must-visit destination for anyone visiting West Java.
