About

Historical Evolution and the Philosophy of Tri Hita Karana

The history of Sacred Monkey Forest Sanctuary is deeply rooted in the spiritual values of the indigenous community of Padangtegal. This area has been an important part of the village's spiritual life for centuries. Historically, the forest was maintained as the village's lungs and a defensive stronghold for the three sacred temples within it.

The development of this forest as an international recreation destination was carried out with great care to ensure that tourism did not damage the ecosystem or the sanctity of the land. The main philosophy underlying this place is Tri Hita Karana, a Balinese life concept emphasizing three harmonious relationships: the relationship between humans and God, humans with fellow humans, and humans with the natural environment. The presence of monkeys here is considered guardians of the temple's sanctity, making their protection a religious obligation.

Recreational Experience and Animal Interaction

The main attraction of this place is its population of approximately 1,200 long-tailed macaques (Macaca fascicularis). Unlike conventional zoos, here visitors walk within their natural habitat. These monkeys live freely, interacting, playing, and foraging among the giant trees.

One of the unique recreational experiences gaining popularity is the "Monkey Selfie," where trained guides help visitors take photos as if the monkey is holding a camera for a selfie. Additionally, visitors can observe the social dynamics of the monkeys, from mothers caring for their babies to power struggles between monkey groups divided into several territories within the forest.

Facilities and Forest Exploration Trails

Sacred Monkey Forest Sanctuary is equipped with very adequate supporting facilities without compromising its natural aesthetics. Pedestrian paths have been built using neatly arranged concrete and wood, allowing visitors to explore the entire 12.5-hectare area comfortably.

Some of the main facilities include:

  • Information Center and Gallery: A place where visitors can learn about the forest's history and the biology of long-tailed macaques through interactive information boards.
  • Wooden Bridge (Canopy Walk): A path crossing a small river with views of green cliffs covered in moss and exotic dangling banyan tree roots.
  • Open Stage: Used for educational activities and occasional cultural performances.
  • Security Facilities: Numerous staff (Monkey Forest Staff) in traditional attire are stationed at every corner to ensure visitor safety and maintain conducive interactions with the monkeys.

Religious Tourism and Architectural Marvels

Within this forest are three sacred temples with different functions, built in the 14th century during the Pejeng Dynasty:

1. Pura Dalem Agung Padangtegal: Located in the southwest, this temple serves as a place of worship for Lord Shiva. Its magnificent architecture with detailed stone carvings creates a strong mystical ambiance.

2. Pura Beji: Located in the northwest near the river, this temple is used for self-purification rituals (Melukat). The presence of holy water springs and natural pools here provides a very calm and magical atmosphere.

3. Pura Prajapati: Located near the village cemetery, this temple is dedicated to the worship of Lord Brahma in his function as the creator of souls returning to their origin.

Visitors can admire the architectural beauty of these temples from the outside, marveling at the moss-covered stone statues that give a very photogenic "Lost World" impression.

Family-Friendly and Educational Destination

Sacred Monkey Forest Sanctuary is a very family-friendly recreational spot. For children, a visit here is a direct biology lesson in the open. They can see how the forest ecosystem works, the importance of preserving rare trees (there are over 115 species of trees), and how wildlife can coexist with humans.

The area is also very clean and well-maintained, so parents do not need to worry when bringing their children. However, it is highly recommended for families to follow safety guidelines, such as not bringing food into bags, not making challenging eye contact with monkeys, and always being under staff supervision.

Community Role and Conservation

Sacred Monkey Forest not only functions as a tourist spot but also as an international research center. Many researchers from various countries come here to study primate behavior. Income from entrance fees is managed directly by Padangtegal Village to fund forest conservation, temple maintenance, and community welfare programs. This is a tangible example of sustainable community-based tourism.

Visitor Information and Best Time to Visit

To get the maximum recreational experience, here are some tips for visitors:

  • Best Time: 09:00 to 11:00 AM is highly recommended as the air is still fresh and the monkeys tend to be calmer after the morning feeding session. The late afternoon before sunset also offers dramatic lighting for photography through the gaps in the trees.
  • Dress Code: As this is a sacred area, visitors are expected to dress modestly. If you wish to enter certain areas, a sarong (Balinese cloth) may be required.
  • Location: Located on Jalan Monkey Forest, Ubud, Gianyar. Its location is very strategic and can be reached on foot if you are staying in central Ubud.

Sacred Monkey Forest Sanctuary offers more than just seeing monkeys. It is a journey into the spiritual heart of Bali, where nature, history, and culture merge in a soul-soothing symphony. For anyone visiting Gianyar, this place is a must-visit destination that provides deep and meaningful recreational memories.
