Eternal Flame of Mrapen: Geological Traces and Spiritual Legends in Grobogan Land
Api Abadi Mrapen is not just an ordinary geological phenomenon; it is a meeting point between the legends of the Majapahit Kingdom, the spread of Islam in Java, and the spirit of national sports. Located in Manggarmas Village, Godong District, Grobogan Regency, Central Java, this site is a source of natural fire that has burned for centuries, making it one of Indonesia's most iconic historical sites.

Historical Origins and the Legend of Sunan Kalijaga
The history of Api Abadi Mrapen is inseparable from the narrative of the fall of the Majapahit Kingdom and the establishment of the Demak Sultanate in the 15th century. According to oral accounts and traditional manuscripts, the existence of this fire is closely related to the journey of Sunan Kalijaga, one of the Wali Songo figures.
It is told that after the fall of Majapahit, Sunan Kalijaga led a group to bring royal relics towards Demak Bintoro. In the midst of their tiring journey, the group stopped to rest in the Mrapen area. Feeling thirsty and finding no water source, Sunan Kalijaga struck his magical staff into the ground. However, instead of water, the hole produced an unquenchable flame. This spot later became known as Api Abadi Mrapen. The second strike of the staff in a different location finally produced a water source, now known as Sendang Dudo.

Site Characteristics and Geological Phenomena
Technically, Api Abadi Mrapen is a phenomenon of natural gas (methane) emerging from the earth's interior, seeping through cracks in the soil layers. This gas then ignites naturally, producing a continuous flame.
Unlike grand architectural temple buildings, the Mrapen site emphasizes functional-spiritual area arrangement. The main fire area is surrounded by concrete structures and iron fences to protect the fire source from external disturbances, while still allowing oxygen to enter so the fire can continue to burn. Around this complex, there are several accompanying objects of high historical value:
1. Watu Bobot: A round andesite stone that is said to be part of the anvil used for forging sacred weapons. Legend has it that if someone can lift this stone, their wish will come true.
2. Sendang Dudo: A pool of water whose water appears to be boiling but remains cold. The water from this spring is believed to have healing properties and is often used in certain rituals.

Historical Significance and Role in National Events
Api Abadi Mrapen holds a vital role in Indonesia's national identity, especially in the field of sports. Since 1963, the flame from Mrapen has been used to light the torch for the international sports event GANEFO (Games of the New Emerging Forces), initiated by President Soekarno.
Since then, Mrapen has become the official source for obtaining the flame for other prestigious sports events, including the National Sports Week (PON), SEA Games, and the 2018 Asian Games. The flame retrieval here symbolizes an unquenchable spirit and pure sportsmanship. Symbolically, this flame connects the past glory of the archipelago with the ambitions of the modern nation on the international stage.
Besides sports, Api Abadi Mrapen is also an important part of religious celebrations. Every year, Buddhists retrieve the sacred flame from Mrapen to be brought to Borobudur Temple as part of the Tri Suci Waisak ceremony. The flame symbolizes inner enlightenment and the eradication of darkness in the dharma teachings.

Related Figures and Periods
This site bears silent witness to the power transitions in Java. Besides Sunan Kalijaga, figures from the Demak Sultanate like Raden Patah are believed to have utilized this place for strategic purposes. Mrapen is also associated with the activities of keris makers in the past. It is said that the heat from this eternal flame was used to forge the kingdom's sacred weapons (keris), as its fire was considered pure and contained strong spiritual energy.

Conservation Status and Restoration Efforts
As a historical and geological site, Api Abadi Mrapen faced serious threats. In September 2020, for the first time in recorded history, the flame at Mrapen completely extinguished. This was due to a decrease in gas pressure caused by well drilling activities around the location and disruptions to the natural gas supply line underground.
The Central Java Provincial Government, through the Department of Energy and Mineral Resources (ESDM), immediately undertook emergency restoration efforts. The recovery process involved cleaning the gas supply hole and sealing gas leaks at other points around Manggarmas village to restore pressure to the Mrapen central point. After intensive technical efforts, the flame was successfully reignited in April 2021. This incident became a momentum for the government to tighten zoning regulations around the site to ensure the sustainability of the natural gas source.

Cultural and Educational Value
Today, Api Abadi Mrapen is managed as a historical and educational tourist destination. The blend of geology (shallow natural gas system) and anthropology (Wali Songo myths) makes this place unique. Tourists come not only to see the fire but also to learn how local beliefs maintain the balance of nature.
The existence of Mrapen in Grobogan affirms that Indonesian history is not only written on inscriptions or stone buildings but is also etched in natural phenomena preserved through generations. This flame is a reminder of the richness of the Nusantara earth and the resilience of its people's culture in preserving ancestral heritage to keep it burning through the ages.
