Unique Geographical and Geological Characteristics

The primary uniqueness of Papuma Beach lies in its contrasting topography. The name "Malikan" refers to a geological phenomenon where the rocks on the shoreline seem to "turn" or make a sound when hit by large waves. Visually, the beach is dominated by seven giant coral fragments standing firmly in the middle of the sea. Local residents have given unique names to these coral clusters based on their shapes, such as Pulau Batara Guru, Pulau Kresna, Pulau Narada, Pulau Kajang, and Pulau Nusa Barong.

These coral rocks are not just landscape adornments; they function as natural wave breakers, protecting the coastline from the direct impact of the notoriously fierce Indian Ocean waves. On the landward side, the beach is fortified by hills that are part of a 50-hectare protected forest area, creating an extraordinary gradation of colors between the green of the forest, the white of the sand, and the blue of the sea.

Papuma Beach is more than just a water destination; it is a complex ecosystem. Before reaching the shoreline, visitors must pass through a forest area managed by Perhutani (Forestry Company). This forest is home to various native flora and fauna of East Java. Here, teak, mahogany, and serut trees grow abundantly, providing natural shade even on the hottest days.

In terms of biodiversity, you can easily encounter long-tailed macaques (Macaca fascicularis) swinging in the trees or approaching tourists. If you are lucky, tropical birds like sea eagles and various types of songbirds can be seen flying among the tree canopies. The existence of this well-preserved forest maintains the air's humidity around the beach, creating a cooler microclimate compared to other coastal areas.

Outdoor Activities and Tourist Experience

Papuma offers a range of activities that are both adrenaline-pumping and soul-soothing. One of the most sought-after experiences is the climb to Siti Hinggil. Located at a height, this viewpoint allows tourists to see a 360-degree panorama of Papuma Beach and Watu Ulo Beach from above. From here, the coral island clusters look like giant sentinels guarding the land.

For photography enthusiasts, the sunrise and sunset moments at Papuma are a must. Due to its peninsular location jutting into the sea, Papuma allows visitors to witness the sunrise and sunset from nearly the same spot. Additionally, exploring the beach by traditional fishing boat is also available. Tourists can rent a boat to circle among the giant coral islands, directly experiencing the power of the southern waves within a safe limit, guided by experienced local fishermen.

For those who want to feel maximum closeness to nature, there is a camping ground under the shade of the trees along the beach. The sound of waves crashing against the Malikan rocks serves as an unforgettable natural lullaby.

Best Time to Visit

To enjoy the clarity of the sea water and the contrasting blue sky, the best time to visit Papuma Beach is during the dry season, between May and September. During this period, sea water visibility is excellent, and the risk of rain while climbing Siti Hinggil is very low.

However, for those who wish to witness cultural phenomena, June or July are often when traditional rituals are performed by the local community as a form of gratitude for the sea's bounty. Visiting Papuma in the morning (around 5:00 AM) is highly recommended to capture the dawn moment, as a thin mist often still blankets the forest hills, creating a beautiful mystical atmosphere.

Conservation and Environmental Protection

As part of a protected forest area and under the supervision of Perhutani, Papuma Beach enforces strict rules regarding environmental preservation. Tourists are strictly forbidden from feeding the macaques indiscriminately to maintain the animals' natural instincts. Conservation efforts also focus on protecting the coral reefs around the small islands.

The management regularly conducts beach clean-ups and urges visitors to minimize the use of single-use plastics. Awareness of this vulnerable ecosystem is continuously being raised, considering Papuma is one of the last green strongholds on Jember's south coast.

Papuma Beach is located approximately 40 kilometers south of Jember city center. The land journey takes about 1 to 1.5 hours. The road access is well-paved, although there are some steep inclines and sharp turns when approaching the forest area, which adds to the sense of adventure.

The facilities at Papuma Beach are quite adequate for both domestic and international tourists. There is a row of stalls serving fresh seafood (grilled fish, squid, and lobster) caught directly by local fishermen. Additionally, there are wooden cottage accommodations that blend with nature, a spacious parking area, a prayer room, and clean public restrooms.
