One of the hidden gems that has now become a favorite for altitude lovers is Puncak Monapa. Natural Characteristics and Landscape
Puncak Monapa is not just an ordinary hill. This destination is part of a mountain range surrounding the Lasusua area and its surroundings. Geographically, Puncak Monapa has hilly terrain with quite challenging slopes. The main uniqueness of this place is the "Sea of Clouds" phenomenon that appears almost every morning.
From Monapa's highest point, visitors can witness a thick expanse of white mist covering the valley, creating an illusion as if we are standing on a sea of cotton. As the sun begins to rise, streaks of orange and gold reflect on the clouds, creating a color gradient that is hard to find elsewhere in Southeast Sulawesi. On the other hand, the view will be pampered with layered mountain silhouettes, showing how rich the topography of North Kolaka is.

Local Ecosystem and Biodiversity
The area around Puncak Monapa is still dominated by lower montane forest vegetation. Lush tropical trees are home to various endemic flora and fauna. If lucky, during the hike or while relaxing at the peak, visitors can hear the chirping of local birds like the Sulawesi Hornbill (Knobbed Hornbill) whose wingbeats sound very distinctive.
The biodiversity here also includes various types of forest ferns, wild orchids, and mosses that thrive due to the high humidity. The air at Puncak Monapa is very pure and cold, a contrast to the air in the coastal areas of North Kolaka which tends to be hot. The air temperature at night can drop quite drastically, so the ecosystem here strongly supports the growth of plants that require cool temperatures.

Outdoor Activities and Tourist Experience
Puncak Monapa is a paradise for adventure seekers. There are several main activities that can be done here:
1. Camping: This is the most popular activity. Visitors usually arrive in the afternoon to set up tents and stay overnight. Spending the night at Puncak Monapa offers an experience of gazing at the clear Milky Way due to minimal light pollution.
2. Landscape Photography: With a backdrop of clouds and sunrise, this place is a dream location for photographers. Every corner of Puncak Monapa offers an aesthetic image composition, from winding hiking trails to viewing posts directly facing the valley.
3. Hiking and Trekking: The journey to the summit requires sufficient stamina. The hiking trail, consisting of red soil and rocks, provides its own challenge for hikers. However, every drop of sweat will be well worth it once you reach the summit plateau.
4. Relaxation and Contemplation: Far from the hustle and bustle of the city, Puncak Monapa is the perfect place for "healing." The calm atmosphere, accompanied only by the sound of the wind and birdsong, is very effective for relieving fatigue.

Best Time to Visit
To get the maximum visual experience, tourists are advised to visit during the dry season, between June and September. During this period, the sky tends to be clear and the possibility of the sea of clouds phenomenon is much greater compared to the rainy season which is often covered by thick clouds or storms.
The best arrival time is in the afternoon around 4:00 PM WITA to enjoy the sunset, or hike in the early morning around 4:00 AM WITA if you only want to do a one-day trip to hunt for the sunrise.

Conservation Status and Environmental Protection
As a destination that relies on natural purity, environmental preservation awareness at Puncak Monapa is highly emphasized. The local government, along with the local tourism awareness community (Pokdarwis), continuously strives to maintain the cleanliness of the camping area. Visitors are required to bring their trash back down.
Protection of native vegetation is also a concern. Hikers are strictly prohibited from cutting down trees for firewood or damaging endemic plants. These conservation efforts are important to ensure that the water cycle and forest ecosystem below Puncak Monapa remain intact, considering this area also functions as a water catchment area for the villages below.

Accessibility and Facilities
Puncak Monapa is not too far from the center of Lasusua, the capital of North Kolaka. The journey can be made by two-wheeled or four-wheeled vehicles to the starting point of the hike or the foot of the hill. However, due to the uphill road conditions and some parts still being unpaved, a well-maintained vehicle is essential.
Facilities at the location are continuously being developed. Currently, several basic facilities are available, including:
- Parking Area: Located at the foot of the hill before the hiking trail begins.
- Photo Spots: Several wooden platforms have been built to make it easier for tourists to take pictures with a cloud backdrop.
- Hiking Trail: A clear trail is already established, minimizing the risk of getting lost.
- Local Stalls: Around the starting point of the hike, there are usually local residents selling basic necessities such as mineral water and snacks.
For tourists coming from outside the province, access to North Kolaka can be reached by land from Sangia Ni Bandera Airport in Kolaka or by sea using a ferry/fiber boat from Siwa Port (South Sulawesi) to Tobaku Port in Lasusua.
