About
Evolution and Development History
Liwa Botanical Garden has a very well-planned development history. The idea for its construction began in 2007 as an effort by the West Lampung Regency Government to create a green open space as well as a conservation center for highland flora. After a long process of land acquisition covering approximately 11.6 hectares and technical assistance from the Indonesian Institute of Sciences (LIPI), the garden was officially launched and began to be widely known by the public in 2017.
Its development was a response to the need for research facilities for rare Sumatran endemic plants. Over time, KRL evolved from merely a research area into a leading tourist icon in West Lampung, now known as the "City of Flowers".
Recreational Experience and Main Activities
Visitors to Liwa Botanical Garden will be welcomed by a grand gate imbued with local architecture. The main activity here is, of course, botanical trekking. Well-maintained pedestrian paths (paving blocks) allow visitors to explore various collection zones without worrying about getting dirty.
One unique experience not found elsewhere is the sensation of walking amidst the fog. Due to its high elevation, fog often descends in the morning and afternoon, enveloping the garden and creating a magical atmosphere as if being in a land above the clouds. Furthermore, photography is a prime activity here. With the majestic Mount Pesagi in the distance and the expanse of green valleys, every corner of KRL is a perfect backdrop for selfies or professional photography.
Facilities and Thematic Collection Zones
Liwa Botanical Garden is designed with zoning that makes it easy for visitors to understand its biodiversity. Some of the available facilities and zones include:
- Araceae Garden: A collection of exotic aroid plants.
- Orchidarium Garden: Home to various types of wild orchids native to West Lampung.
- Bromeliad Garden: An area showcasing plants with beautiful color gradients.
- Fragrant Garden: A zone specifically planted with aromatic plants, providing a relaxing therapy for visitors.
- Conservation and Nursery Building: An educational space for students or researchers who want to learn about plant propagation.
- Gazebos and Rest Areas: Scattered at strategic points for resting while enjoying the gentle breeze.
Other supporting facilities include a spacious parking area, a prayer room, clean restrooms, and smooth road access for two-wheeled and four-wheeled vehicles.
Family-Friendly Entertainment and Recreation
For families with children, Liwa Botanical Garden provides a safe open space for play. The neatly trimmed grass areas are often used for family picnics. Visitors are allowed to bring mats and food supplies to enjoy together while breathing clean, pollution-free air.
Education is subtly integrated as entertainment content. Each collection plant is equipped with an information board (label) listing its scientific name and origin. This makes family visits not just a stroll, but also an opportunity to gain botanical knowledge for schoolchildren.
Cultural Significance and Community Role
Liwa Botanical Garden holds a strong cultural role for the local community of West Lampung. The architecture of some buildings within the garden adopts Lampung cultural elements, such as traditional ornamental motifs. KRL also often hosts cultural festivals and community events, such as the Lamban Gedung Cultural Festival.
The presence of this botanical garden also drives creative economic growth in its surroundings. Local communities are involved in providing Liwa's signature culinary offerings around the garden area, as well as selling ornamental plant seedlings. KRL has become a collective pride for the people of West Lampung, proving that environmental conservation can go hand in hand with improving community welfare through tourism.
Unique Experience: Witnessing Sunrise Behind the Mountains
One of the most sought-after recreational experiences is the sunrise moment. Visitors who arrive very early can witness the panorama of the sun emerging from behind the mountains, illuminating the dew-kissed treetops. The color contrast between the orange sky, the green of the trees, and the white mist creates a dramatic and soul-soothing view.
Visitor Information and Best Time to Visit
To enjoy Liwa Botanical Garden to the fullest, here are some guidelines for visitors:
- Best Time: The most ideal time to visit is in the morning between 08:00 to 10:00 WIB or in the afternoon after 15:00 WIB. During these times, the air temperature is very cool, and the sunlight is excellent for photography.
- Access: KRL is located very close to the center of Liwa City, just a few minutes from the Tugu Kayu Ara. The road access is very good, making it easily reachable from Bandar Lampung (approximately 5-6 hours journey) or from South Sumatra.
- What to Bring: As the weather in Liwa tends to be cold and sudden rain is frequent, it is advisable to bring a light jacket and an umbrella or raincoat.
- Etiquette: As a conservation area, visitors are strictly prohibited from picking plants, stepping on grass in restricted areas, or littering.
Liwa Botanical Garden is not just a tourist destination, but the lungs of West Lampung and a nature school for anyone who wants to get closer to the richness of Indonesian flora. With the continuous development of facilities and plant collections, Liwa Botanical Garden is ready to become a world-class ecotourism destination at the western tip of Sumatra Island.
