About

Geographical Wonders and Coastal Landscapes

Gili Kondo is a small, uninhabited island surrounded by the waters of the Alas Strait, which separates Lombok Island from Sumbawa Island. One of the most prominent natural features of Gili Kondo is the highly contrasting gradation of its seawater colors. At the shoreline, the water appears transparent like glass, then turns turquoise in shallow areas, and deep blue as it enters deeper trenches.

The sand on Gili Kondo has a very fine texture and is pure white, with almost no sharp rocks along its coast. Another uniqueness of this island is its petite size; visitors can circumnavigate the entire island on foot in approximately 15 to 20 minutes. When the tide recedes, sandbars or temporary sandbanks often emerge, connecting Gili Kondo with its neighboring islands, such as Gili Bidara, creating a natural walking path in the middle of the sea.

Underwater Ecosystems and Biodiversity

The main attraction of Gili Kondo lies beneath its surface. This area is part of the marine life migration corridor in the Alas Strait. The coral reef ecosystem around Gili Kondo is still very well-preserved, consisting of various types of hard corals and soft corals that are home to thousands of species of ornamental fish.

If you go snorkeling, you will easily find Clownfish among the anemones, Parrotfish with their electric colors, and green sea turtles that occasionally surface for air. The water clarity here allows for a visibility of 10 to 15 meters, making it one of the best underwater observation spots in East Lombok. The currents around the island tend to be calm, making it safe for the coral reef ecosystem to grow without significant mechanical damage from large waves.

Outdoor Experiences and Main Activities

As a pure nature tourism destination, activities on Gili Kondo focus on direct interaction with the environment:

1. Snorkeling and Diving: This is a must-do activity. There are several coral spots referred to as "underwater gardens" where coral formations resemble small hills on the seabed.

2. Island Hopping: Gili Kondo is usually the central point in travel packages to surrounding small islands like Gili Bidara, Gili Kapal, and Gili Lampu. Gili Kapal itself is unique as it is merely a sand mound that appears during low tide.

3. Camping Under the Stars: Since there are no permanent buildings or hotels on this island, camping is the best way to enjoy Gili Kondo. Enjoying a bonfire with the sound of waves and a night sky clear of light pollution provides an extraordinary astrophotography experience.

4. Nature Photography: The sunrise view on Gili Kondo is very dramatic with the silhouette of the mountains on Sumbawa Island as its backdrop, while the sunset presents the majestic silhouette of Mount Rinjani to the west.

Best Time to Visit

Seasonally, the best time to visit Gili Kondo is during the dry season, which is between April and October. During this period, the sky tends to be clear blue and the sea is very calm, which is ideal for crossing by traditional wooden boats (sampans).

During these months, the southeast wind blows, bringing cooler air. However, it's important to note that in July and August, the wind can be quite strong. If your main goal is to see the phenomenon of Gili Kapal (sandbar) appearing, it's best to come during the new moon or full moon when tidal changes are extreme.

Conservation and Environmental Protection

Gili Kondo is part of an area overseen by the local community and regional government through a community-based management concept. Given its fragile ecosystem, there are unwritten but strongly emphasized rules for visitors: it is strictly forbidden to step on coral reefs, to take sand or shells, and visitors must bring their trash back to the mainland (Lombok).

Conservation efforts are also evident from the presence of coral transplantation areas at several points. The community is aware that their economic survival depends on the preservation of Gili Kondo's nature, so surveillance against destructive fishing practices (like bomb fishing) has been completely stopped in this area for the past few decades.

Accessibility and Facilities

To reach Gili Kondo, the journey begins from Mataram City center or Lombok International Airport towards Padak Guar Harbor in East Lombok. This land journey takes about 2.5 to 3 hours. From Padak Guar Harbor, visitors must rent a motorboat from local fishermen, with a travel time of about 15-20 minutes to the island.

Facilities on Gili Kondo are very limited to maintain its natural feel. There are several wooden gazebos for resting and simple public toilets managed communally. There are no permanent food stalls or fancy restaurants, so visitors are advised to bring their own logistical supplies. The lack of facilities is precisely what attracts tourists seeking an authentic back-to-nature experience, far from the excessive commercialization often found in other popular tourist destinations.

Gili Kondo is more than just a tourist destination; it is a representation of the harmony between wild nature and sustainable tourism. With its snow-white sand and stunning underwater gardens, this island remains East Lombok's best-kept secret for those who dare to explore further.
