About
Geological Uniqueness: The Secret Behind the Pink Sand
The main attraction of Tangsi Beach lies in its unusual sand color. This pink hue is not a result of pollution or engineering, but a natural process involving marine microorganisms called Foraminifera. These microscopic creatures live on coral reefs and have red shells.
When these red corals die and are broken down by waves, their fine grains mix with white sand derived from calcium carbonate. The meeting of clean white grains and red coral fragments creates a soft pink gradation. This phenomenon is most clearly visible when sunlight illuminates the coast in the morning or when wet waves sweep across the sand surface, giving a stunning rose-colored shimmer.
Natural Landscape and Surrounding Ecosystem
Unlike the beaches in West or Central Lombok, which tend to be fertile, Tangsi Beach is located in a drier region with savanna characteristics. The low hills surrounding the beach are covered with vegetation typical of dry areas, changing color with the seasons—fresh green in the rainy season and exotic golden brown in the dry season.
The beach is surrounded by sturdy limestone cliffs, creating a calm natural bay. On the left side of the beach, there is a cape hill that juts out into the sea. From the top of this hill, visitors can enjoy a 360-degree panorama showcasing the contrast between the blue of the Indian Ocean, the pink color of the coast, and clusters of small islands (gili) scattered in the distance.
The underwater ecosystem around Tangsi Beach is also well-preserved. Acropora type coral reefs and table corals are home to various colorful reef fish, making it a marine park rich in biodiversity.
Variety of Outdoor Activities
Tangsi Beach offers a tourist experience far from urban crowds. Its very calm waters, protected by the bay, make it a very safe place for various water activities:
1. Snorkeling and Diving: Just a few meters from the shoreline, visitors can discover a beautiful marine park. The relatively calm currents allow beginner divers to enjoy the beauty of the coral reefs without worrying about being swept away by strong currents.
2. Island Hopping: Around Pink Beach, there are several other equally charming small destinations, such as Gili Petelu, famous for its ornamental fish, and the quieter Pink Beach 2 and Pink Beach 3.
3. Soft Trekking: Hiking the hill on the side of the beach is a must-do activity. The trek is generally light and short, but rewards with spectacular views of the East Lombok landscape from above.
4. Nature Photography: With extreme color contrasts between the blue sky, turquoise water, and pink sand, this location is a paradise for landscape photographers.
Best Time to Visit
To get the maximum visual experience, choosing the right time to visit is crucial. The sand will appear most pink between 08:00 and 10:00 AM and 4:00 PM to 5:00 PM. This is because the angle of the sunlight affects the color reflection on the red coral grains.
Seasonally, the best time to visit is between May and October (dry season). During this period, the sky is usually clear without clouds, and the sea water is at its highest clarity. However, for those who prefer green hill scenery, visiting at the end of the rainy season (March-April) will provide a more tropical ambiance.
Conservation Status and Environmental Protection
As part of the Sekaroh protected forest area, Tangsi Beach is under strict supervision regarding its natural preservation. Conservation efforts focus on protecting coral reefs from boat anchors and prohibiting the removal of beach sand as souvenirs. Visitors are strongly encouraged to practice the Leave No Trace principle, as the Foraminifera ecosystem is very sensitive to changes in water temperature and plastic waste pollution.
The local government and community are now implementing an environmentally based management system to ensure that the surge in tourist numbers does not damage the natural structure of the sand and the health of the corals that are the source of the pink color.
Accessibility and Facilities
Reaching Tangsi Beach is an adventure in itself. Located about 82 kilometers from Mataram City, the land journey takes approximately 2 to 2.5 hours. The route to the location has undergone many improvements, although the last few kilometers are still challenging roads that cut through teak forests and savanna areas.
A popular alternative access is by sea. Tourists can rent a boat from Tanjung Luar Harbor. This sea route is highly recommended as it offers the opportunity to stop by small islands in the vicinity before reaching Pink Beach.
Facilities at the location are now quite adequate while maintaining a natural feel. There is a parking area, several local warungs serving fresh seafood and young coconuts, and small gazebos for resting. Although there are no luxury hotels directly on the beach, there are several eco-homestay options in the surrounding villages that allow tourists to experience the hospitality of the East Lombok locals.
Pink Beach (Tangsi Beach) is more than just a photo destination; it is a testament to the grandeur of natural evolution. Every grain of its sand tells a story of complex marine life and the beauty born from the tranquility of the eastern tip of Lombok Island.
