About
Historical Background and Origin of Establishment
The construction of Kresek Monument was initiated by the East Java Provincial Government under the leadership of Governor Soelarso. Construction began in 1987 and was inaugurated on June 10, 1991. The choice of location in Kresek Village was not without deep reason; this area was the final point of escape and the site of the massacre of important figures, religious scholars, and state apparatus by the pro-Musso and Amir Sjarifuddin groups.
Historically, the monument occupies approximately 2 hectares of land that was once a residential area for villagers, later converted into a prisoner camp and execution site. Kresek Village was chosen by the rebel group due to its remote location and geographical protection by the mountainous terrain, making it their last stronghold before finally being suppressed by the Siliwangi Division and other government support forces.
Architecture and Construction Details
Kresek Monument is designed with an architectural style that combines elements of narrative symbolism and a memorial garden. Upon entering the site, visitors are greeted by a grand gate leading to concrete stairs symbolizing the ascent towards historical understanding.
The most striking architectural element is the presence of a series of bronze statues placed at various strategic points. At the peak of the monument hill stands a giant statue depicting an old man being beheaded by another man holding a sword. This statue is not merely a work of art but a representation of Musso (the rebellion leader) executing a local Kyai or religious figure named Kyai Husen.
On the other side, there is a long relief carved into the concrete walls surrounding the main area. This relief tells the chronology of the events in detail, from propaganda in Madiun City, the abduction of important figures, to the suppression operation by the TNI. The materials used are dominated by natural stone and reinforced concrete, giving a sturdy yet somber impression, in line with the tragic atmosphere that is intended to be remembered.
Historical Significance and Related Events
The significance of Kresek Monument lies in its function as an "open history book" about betrayal amidst the struggle to defend independence from Dutch military aggression. In 1948, while Indonesia was fighting the Dutch, internal divisions culminated in the proclamation of the "Indonesian Soviet Republic" in Madiun.
It was at this location that the names of prominent figures who became victims of the conflict's brutality were recorded. One of the most notable is Colonel Infanteri Marhadi, whose name is now immortalized as the name of the main road in Madiun City. In addition, there are names like Letkol Wiyono, as well as several civilian officials such as the Resident of Madiun and the first Governor of East Java, RMTA Soerjo, who also fell in the bloody events.
In the lower area of the monument, there is a stone inscription bearing the names of TNI soldiers and community leaders who fell in Kresek Village. The presence of this list of names provides historical validity that the place was a mass grave before the bodies of the victims were eventually moved to more appropriate heroes' cemeteries.
Important Figures and Historical Period
This monument is closely related to the "Physical Revolution" period (1945-1949). The figures involved in the monument's narrative are divided into two sides. On the rebel side are Musso, who returned from the Soviet Union, and Amir Sjarifuddin, who was disappointed with the Renville Agreement. On the government side, the monument honors the services of Commander-in-Chief General Sudirman and Colonel Gatot Subroto, who led the suppression operation.
A little-known unique fact is that around the monument site, there are remnants of house foundations that were once used as "slaughterhouses." These houses were deliberately demolished, and the area was left empty as a form of respect for the victims whose blood was spilled on that land.
Preservation and Restoration Efforts
As a Historical Site managed by the Madiun Regency Government, Kresek Monument receives regular attention in terms of physical maintenance. Although some parts of the bronze statues had experienced corrosion due to the humid mountain weather, periodic restoration efforts have been carried out to preserve the detailed expressions on the statues so they can continue to convey their emotional message.
The local government also undertakes landscape arrangement by adding supporting facilities such as parking areas, pavilions for education, and flower gardens. This is done to change the image of a place once considered haunted and frightening into an educational historical tourist destination for the younger generation, without diminishing its sacred historical value.
Cultural and Religious Significance
For the people of Madiun and its surroundings, Kresek Monument holds deep religious value. Every October 1st, coinciding with Pancasila Sanctity Day, this site becomes the center of commemoration ceremonies. Additionally, many pilgrims, especially families of the fallen religious scholars and figures, come to pray for their ancestors.
Culturally, this monument is a symbol of Pancasila's ideological resilience in East Java. Its existence affirms Madiun's identity, which has now transformed from a region once tarnished by conflict into a peaceful and prosperous city. This monument serves as a collective reminder that similar tragedies should never happen again in the future.
With its grand structure and powerful narrative, Kresek Monument remains the most comprehensive memorial monument in East Java in depicting the political and military dynamics during the early days of the Republic of Indonesia. Visiting this site is not just about seeing statues and reliefs, but about engaging in deep reflection on the high price of national unity.
