About
History and Development Evolution
Bening Widas Reservoir, which technically dams the flow of Kali Bening, began construction in the late 1970s and was inaugurated around 1984. Initially, this project was part of a government program to strengthen food security through irrigation for thousands of hectares of agricultural land in Madiun and surrounding areas. Additionally, the reservoir served as a flood controller and a Hydroelectric Power Plant (PLTA).
As time went by, the aesthetic potential of this 570-hectare calm water surface began to be recognized. The local government, along with Perum Jasa Tirta I, then developed this area into an integrated tourist region. Its evolution is clearly visible from the addition of modern facilities without losing the natural nuance of the teak forest that characterizes the Saradan area. Today, Bening Widas Reservoir is not just a water infrastructure, but a proud tourism icon for the people of East Java.
Recreational Activities and Unique Experiences
The main attraction of Bening Widas Reservoir lies in its combination of varied water and land activities. Visitors can enjoy the sensation of touring the reservoir by motorboat rented from local residents. Exploring the reservoir's nooks and crannies, even to the small "islands" in the middle, provides a different perspective on the grandeur of this dam.
For those who seek tranquility, fishing is a favorite activity. The reservoir is known as a natural habitat for tilapia, mujair, and snakehead fish. On weekends, the sight of anglers sitting patiently along the pier edges or renting small boats to the middle of the reservoir is a common scene. Furthermore, there is a wooden pier that juts out into the water, which is a favorite spot for photographers to hunt for sunset photos reflecting on the calm water surface.
Available Facilities and Entertainment
Bening Widas Reservoir has been equipped with various facilities to support visitor comfort. In the main area, there are neatly arranged gardens and large trees providing shade. Public facilities such as ample parking areas, prayer rooms, and clean toilets are available in adequate condition.
For visitors who wish to spend more time, there are officially managed accommodations or guest houses. Additionally, there are children's and adult swimming pools located near the entrance, offering an alternative for those who want to swim safely while still enjoying the fresh forest air circulation. For culinary enthusiasts, a row of stalls on the reservoir's edge serves signature dishes of fresh grilled fish caught directly from the reservoir, usually served with chili paste and typical Madiun side dishes.
Family and Child-Friendly Destination
As a family recreation spot, Bening Widas Reservoir offers a safe and educational environment. A children's playground is available with various rides such as swings and slides. The very spacious green open areas allow families to spread out mats and have picnics together under the shade of teak trees.
The calm characteristics of the reservoir also make it a good place to introduce aquatic ecosystems to children. Parents can take their children to see firsthand how the dam system works or observe water birds that often stop by the swampy areas. The low-pollution air and the atmosphere far from the noise of motor vehicles make this location an ideal place for family bonding.
Cultural Significance and Role for the Community
Bening Widas Reservoir holds deep social and cultural significance for the surrounding community. This location is regularly used for community events, ranging from regional fishing festivals to sports activities like fun walks and leisurely bike rides. The existence of this tourist attraction also drives the local economy, with local residents actively involved as culinary vendors, tour guides, and boat rental managers.
The local wisdom culture in maintaining water cleanliness and the preservation of teak forests around the reservoir continues to be fostered by the tourism-aware community (Pokdarwis). This indicates that Bening Widas Reservoir is not merely a static tourist object, but a dynamic public space that strengthens the communal identity of the Madiun people as a community in harmony with nature.
Visitor Information and Best Time to Visit
Bening Widas Reservoir is strategically located, very close to the national highway connecting Madiun and Nganjuk. Access is very easy to reach by both private vehicles and inter-city buses. The entrance ticket price is also very affordable for all segments, making it a low-cost yet high-quality tourism option.
The best time to visit this reservoir is in the morning between 06:00 and 09:00 AM Western Indonesian Time, when the air is still very fresh and a thin mist sometimes still blankets the water surface. Another good time is in the afternoon starting from 3:30 PM to enjoy the sunset view. If you plan to visit on a weekend or national holiday, it is advisable to come earlier to secure the best parking spot and picnic location by the reservoir.
Bening Widas Reservoir is a tangible proof of how an infrastructure project can transform into a recreational space that unites humans, technology, and nature. With all its facilities and charm, this reservoir remains a must-visit destination for anyone passing through the central route of East Java.
