Semolon Waterfall distinguishes itself from thousands of other waterfalls in the archipelago through its structure and water temperature. The most striking phenomenon is its warm water flow. This heat source originates from natural geothermal activity beneath Malinau's earth crust, which then seeps out through rock crevices.

Visually, Semolon does not fall vertically from a high cliff. Instead, it is shaped like a giant staircase consisting of nine tiers (traps). The rocks here have undergone a mineralization process over thousands of years, creating smooth rock surfaces with a yellowish hue due to sulfur and other mineral content. The aesthetics of these tiers resemble rice terraces irrigated with clear water, creating a gradation of colors that contrasts with the surrounding greenery.

Mentarang Ecosystem and Biodiversity

Situated in a pristine area, Semolon Waterfall is surrounded by dense secondary and primary forests. The ecosystem around the waterfall is part of the Mentarang landscape, rich in biodiversity. The high humidity around the bathing area supports the growth of mosses, forest ferns, and wild orchids clinging to the trunks of meranti trees. The presence of warm water also creates a unique micro-habitat for several types of microorganisms and small aquatic fauna adapted to higher temperatures compared to other rivers in the vicinity. 1. Bathing Therapy: Visitors can choose the pool tier according to their depth and temperature preferences. The closer to the source at the top, the warmer the water tends to be.

3. Soft Trekking: To reach the upper parts of the waterfall, visitors can take a light hike along the forest edges. This path offers a different perspective of the Malinau forest landscape from above.

During this period, the water flow tends to be stable and the water is clearer. Additionally, the warm water temperature will feel more contrasting and enjoyable on clear mornings or cool afternoons.

Conversely, during extreme rainy seasons, the water flow can increase sharply and carry sediment from upstream, making the water appear brownish. However, for those who enjoy the sight of a roaring waterfall, the rainy season offers a more majestic impression of nature's power.

Conservation Status and Environmental Protection

As a prime natural tourist asset in North Kalimantan, Semolon Waterfall is under the supervision of the Malinau Regency Government through the Tourism Office. Conservation efforts are focused on maintaining the authenticity of the rock structures and the cleanliness of the water source. Visitors are strictly prohibited from using soap or chemical shampoos while bathing in the natural pools to preserve the aquatic ecosystem and prevent damage to the mineral rock formations.

The awareness of the local Dayak indigenous community also plays a crucial role in protecting this area. They consider forests and water as sources of life that must be kept sacred, so customary laws often synergize with government regulations in preserving Semolon from threats of illegal logging or pollution.

Accessibility and Facilities

Reaching Semolon Waterfall requires an adventurous spirit. From Malinau City center, the land journey takes about 2 to 3 hours by four-wheeled or two-wheeled vehicles. The route to Paking Village has undergone many improvements, although some road sections may still be challenging with Kalimantan's typical hilly terrain.

Upon arrival at the parking area, visitors usually have to walk a short distance through a well-maintained path to reach the waterfall point. Facilities available at the location include:
