About

Geographical Characteristics and Natural Uniqueness

As its name suggests, "Yen Bebay" in the local Biak-Numfor language means "wide sand" or "large sand." The main characteristic of this beach is its perfectly curved coastline with stretches of clean white sand that has a very fine texture, almost like flour. This uniqueness contrasts with some other beaches on the mainland of Papua which sometimes have darker volcanic sand material.

Geographically, Yen Bebay Beach faces directly towards Doreri Bay. This position provides the advantage of relatively calm and friendly waves, as it is protected by a cluster of small islands around it, such as Mansinam Island and Lemon Island. On the land side, the beach is fortified by lush coastal vegetation, creating a green canopy that provides natural coolness amidst the heat of the tropical sun.

Underwater Ecosystem and Biodiversity

Despite being close to urban areas, the ecosystem at Yen Bebay White Sand Beach still holds extraordinary biodiversity. Beneath its turquoise blue waters lies a marine garden that is home to various types of coral reefs, ranging from colorful hard corals to soft corals.

Divers and snorkeling enthusiasts often encounter schools of tropical fish such as clownfish hiding behind anemones, bright parrotfish, and occasionally hawksbill turtles swimming by. The presence of seagrass beds in some shallow areas also indicates the health of the coastal ecosystem, serving as a natural breeding ground for small marine life. The coastal forests around this area are also still inhabited by endemic birds of Papua, including several types of parrots and cockatoos whose calls are often heard in the morning.

Outdoor Activities and Tourist Experience

Yen Bebay White Sand Beach is a natural playground for every visitor. Here are some experiences not to be missed:

1. Swimming and Snorkeling: Its calm and clear waters make this beach an ideal place for swimming for all ages. Just a few meters from the shore, you can already see the beauty of the coral reefs without having to dive too deep.

2. Island Hopping Tours: From Yen Bebay, tourists can rent local motorboats (johnson) to cross to the historic Mansinam Island or the tranquil Lemon Island. This short trip offers a different perspective on the beauty of the bay.

3. Nature Photography: As dusk approaches, the sky above Yen Bebay often transforms into a palette of orange, purple, and pink. The sunset view with the silhouette of fishing boats and the Arfak Mountains in the distance is a moment highly sought after by professional and amateur photographers alike.

4. Family Picnics: Under the shade of ketapang and coconut trees, many local families spend time spreading out mats, enjoying packed lunches, or grilling fresh fish caught by local fishermen.

Best Time to Visit

To get the best visual experience, the most recommended time is between April and September. During this period, the monsoon winds are usually calmer, making the sea water very clear and tranquil, ideal for underwater activities.

For those who want to enjoy maximum tranquility, visit on weekdays (Monday-Friday). On weekends or national holidays, the beach will be very crowded with locals who consider Yen Bebay their primary recreational spot. Visiting the beach in the morning (07:00 - 09:00) offers the advantage of fresh air and sunlight that is not yet too harsh for photography.

Conservation and Environmental Protection

As a leading destination, conservation aspects are of important concern at Yen Bebay Beach. The local government, along with the local community, continuously strives to keep the beach clean from plastic waste. Visitors are strongly encouraged not to damage the coral reefs while snorkeling.

This area is also part of the broader coastal protection efforts in Manokwari, aiming to ensure that tourism facility development does not compromise the integrity of the coastal forest and coral reef ecosystems. Visitors are highly urged to take their trash back with them and not to touch or step on corals while in the water.

Accessibility and Supporting Facilities

One of the main advantages of Yen Bebay White Sand Beach is its very easy accessibility. Located about 5-7 kilometers from the center of Manokwari City, the beach can be reached in less than 15-20 minutes by motorized vehicle, whether a private car, motorcycle, or public transport (angkot). The road to the location is smoothly paved with coastal views along the journey.

Available facilities currently include:

  • Parking Lot: A spacious parking area is available for two-wheeled and four-wheeled vehicles.
  • Tourist Huts: There are rows of honai or small huts that visitors can rent for resting.
  • Local Stalls: Food and drink vendors are available along the beach area, serving fresh young coconuts and local specialties.
  • Equipment Rental: Tourists can rent swimming rings or simple snorkeling equipment from local service providers.
  • Toilets and Changing Rooms: Basic facilities are available for cleaning up after swimming in the sea.

Yen Bebay White Sand Beach is more than just an ordinary tourist destination; it is a representation of the harmony between Papua's wild nature and the hospitality of the Manokwari people. With its stunning sandy expanse and underwater riches, Yen Bebay remains a shining gem on the West Papua coast, inviting anyone to come and experience its natural purity.
