About

History and Development Evolution

The development of Bukit Kasih was initiated by the North Sulawesi regional government as a response to the need for a symbol of unity amidst the nation's diversity. The name "Bukit Kasih" (Hill of Love) was chosen to represent love for fellow human beings regardless of their beliefs. Since its inauguration, this area has continuously evolved. Initially just a simple hiking trail to the summit, Bukit Kasih has now transformed into an integrated tourist area with adequate infrastructure, including the iconic thousands of stairs, a 22-meter-high monument, and modern supporting facilities that remain in harmony with nature.

Recreational Experience and Main Activities

One of the main attractions that distinguishes Bukit Kasih from other recreational spots is the presence of five places of worship standing side-by-side at the summit of the hill. Visitors can embark on a spiritual journey by visiting a Catholic Church, a Protestant Church, a Mosque, a Hindu Temple, and a Buddhist Vihara.

Physical activity is an inseparable part of visiting here. To reach the summit, visitors must climb the "Tangga Kasih" (Stairway of Love), which consists of approximately 2,435 steps. This journey is physically challenging, but along the path, visitors will be treated to stunning views of the Minahasa valley and the magical sensation of sulfur steam from the active crater. For those who do not wish to climb to the summit, there is a gentler circular path that still offers beautiful views of the pine forest.

Interesting Facilities and Entertainment

Bukit Kasih provides various facilities designed for the comfort of tourists. In the lower area or at the entrance, there is a natural hot spring pool. The sulfur-containing water is believed to have healing properties for various skin diseases and to relax tense muscles after hiking.

Another unique entertainment is the unusual culinary experience. Visitors can buy raw eggs or corn from local vendors and cook them themselves in the boiling hot springs around the crater area. The distinctive sulfur aroma and the warmth of the earth's steam create a very memorable dining atmosphere. Additionally, there is an open stage that is often used for local Minahasa cultural art performances on holidays or special events.

Family-Friendly Recreation and Unique Attractions

Bukit Kasih is very suitable for family tourism as it offers a balanced blend of education and recreation. For children, seeing a sulfur crater emitting smoke firsthand is a real geology lesson. In the middle area, there is the towering Monument of Struggle with carvings of religious figures and heroes, serving as an educational photo spot about the history of tolerance in Indonesia.

One of the unique attractions found only here is the carving of the faces of the Minahasa ancestors, Toar and Lumimuut, on a large rock cliff face. This carving reminds visitors of the origins of the Minahasa people and the legends associated with them. The presence of traditional masseurs offering foot massage services using hot sulfur water is also a special attraction for parents who want to relax after a long walk.

Cultural Significance and Community Role

Culturally, Bukit Kasih plays a vital role as a "Laboratory of Harmony." This place often serves as a venue for interfaith gatherings and peace ceremonies. The local community in Kanonang Village is deeply involved in managing this place, from being tour guides, managing accommodations in the surrounding area, to being souvenir artisans. The harmonious relationship between the management and nature is reflected in the efforts to preserve the forest around the hill, which remains lush green despite being in an active volcanic area. For the Minahasa people, Bukit Kasih is a source of pride that proves the motto "Torang Samua Basudara" (We Are All Brothers and Sisters) is not just words, but a tangible way of life.

Visitor Information and Best Time to Visit

To enjoy the maximum experience at Bukit Kasih Kanonang, visitors are advised to come in the morning between 07:00 and 10:00 WITA (Central Indonesian Time). During this time, the air is still very fresh, a thin mist often covers the hilltop, and the sun is not yet too strong for climbing the thousands of stairs. Another alternative is late afternoon before sunset to see the silhouette of the places of worship at the summit against an orange sky.

Access to the location is quite easy, about 50 kilometers or a 90-minute drive from Manado City. It is recommended to wear comfortable, non-slip sports shoes as some parts of the stairs may be damp due to steam or rain. Don't forget to bring drinking water, although there are many small stalls available along the hiking trail.

Bukit Kasih Kanonang offers more than just natural scenery; it offers inner peace and a reminder of the beauty of unity. This destination is a must-visit for anyone who wants to feel the warmth of tolerance amidst the cool nature of Minahasa.
