The primary characteristic that makes Soeman HS Library so architecturally unique is its roof shape, which resembles a Rehal, the wooden stand used for reading the Al-Qur'an. This choice of form is not without reason; it symbolizes profound respect for knowledge and literacy traditions in Islam. From a distance, the building's profile appears like an open book, conveying a strong visual message about the building's function as a storehouse of knowledge.

The architectural style of this building is categorized as Modern-Tropical with a Traditional Flair. The extensive use of glass on the facade creates a modern and transparent impression, while the giant arched structure supporting the roof evokes a sense of grandeur and monumentality. The architect behind this masterpiece, Ismail Fauzi, successfully translated local identity into the language of contemporary architecture without falling into cliché traditional ornamentation.

History and Development Context

The building is named in honor of Soeman Hasibuan (Soeman HS), one of Indonesia's great literary figures from Riau who pioneered detective fiction writing in the country. The construction of this building began during the governorship of Rusli Zainal and was inaugurated by President Susilo Bambang Yudhoyono in 2008.

Its development was part of an ambitious project to make Riau a center of Malay culture in Southeast Asia. With a building area of 15,000 square meters spread across six floors, this library is designed to house hundreds of thousands of literary collections, ranging from ancient Malay manuscripts to modern digital literature.

Spatial Structure and Visitor Experience

Upon entering the main lobby, visitors are greeted by a high atrium with efficient vertical circulation. The library employs an open plan concept in its reading areas, giving a spacious and uncluttered feel.

1. Ground Floor and Mezzanine: Used for information areas, registration services, and exhibition spaces that often showcase Riau's cultural artifacts.

2. Upper Floors: House various departments, including the *Children Library*, designed with bright colors, the *General Library*, and most notably, the Bilik Melayu.

3. Bilik Melayu: This is the cultural heart of the building. This special room houses rare collections on Malay history, culture, and literature. The interior on this floor often features more dominant wood accents, creating a contemplative atmosphere distinct from other areas.

Visitors can also enjoy panoramic views of Pekanbaru city from behind the expansive glass walls. The integration of external landscapes and internal spaces makes the reading experience at Soeman HS Library feel dynamic.
