About

Characteristics of the Landscape and Distinctive White Sand

Matakus Beach possesses unique geomorphological characteristics. Unlike beaches in Java or Bali, Matakus Beach is dominated by vast stretches of very fine white sand, almost resembling flour in texture. This sand is formed from calcium carbonate sedimentation resulting from coral reef weathering over thousands of years. Its gently sloping coastline extends with a striking contrast in sea water colors—ranging from transparent white at the shoreline, to turquoise green in shallow areas, and deep blue in the ocean trenches.

One of the most prominent natural features at Matakus Beach is the "Metu" phenomenon, or extreme low tide. At certain times, the sea water recedes up to hundreds of meters, revealing a flat expanse called a reef flat. When this phenomenon occurs, visitors can walk far into the sea to see coral formations that are usually hidden beneath the water's surface.

Coastal Ecosystem and Biodiversity

Matakus Beach is not just a recreational spot, but a complex ecosystem. Along the coastline, lush coconut trees grow, as well as typical Indonesian Eastern coastal vegetation like ketapang trees (Terminalia catappa) and sea waru trees, providing natural shade.

Beneath its surface, Matakus Beach is home to an extraordinary underwater garden. The coral reef ecosystem here is dominated by hard coral species such as Acropora and Porites. The exceptionally clear water allows sunlight to penetrate up to depths of 15-20 meters, supporting algal growth and serving as a habitat for various exotic coral fish species, ranging from clownfish and parrotfish, to occasional hawksbill turtles passing by in search of food in the seagrass meadows.

The seagrass meadows around Matakus Island also function as important marine lungs, absorbing carbon while serving as a spawning ground for small marine life. The sustainability of this ecosystem is well-preserved because the local community still adheres to local wisdom values in managing their marine resources.

Outdoor Activities and Tourist Experience

For nature lovers, Matakus Beach offers a wide spectrum of activities:

1. Snorkeling and Diving: The exceptional water clarity makes snorkeling a must-do activity. The currents around the beach are relatively calm, making it safe for beginners. For professional divers, there are wall dive spots outside the island area that offer views of underwater cliffs filled with colorful corals.

2. Island Hopping: Matakus Island is part of a cluster of small islands. Visitors can rent traditional wooden boats (loba) from local fishermen to explore the uninhabited islands around it.

3. Coastal Cultural Tourism: Interacting with the people of Matakus Village provides a different dimension to the experience. Visitors can witness the legendary Tanimbar ikat weaving process or observe traditional fishermen who still use spears (kalawai) to catch fish.

4. Nature Photography: During sunset, Matakus Beach presents an extraordinary palette of sky colors, from deep orange to purple, perfectly reflected on the calm sea surface.

Best Time to Visit

The climate in the Tanimbar Islands is heavily influenced by monsoon winds. The best time to visit Matakus Beach is during the East Season, which typically falls between April and September. During this period, the sea tends to be calm, the water is very clear, and sunny weather dominates, making it ideal for water activities and inter-island voyages.

Conversely, during the West Season (December to February), sea waves in the Banda Sea and Arafura Sea waters tend to be high, which can make sea transportation access to the island difficult.

Conservation and Environmental Protection

To this day, Matakus Beach maintains its natural status thanks to the oversight of the local community. The Tanimbar people have a tradition called "Sasi," which is customary law that prohibits the harvesting of certain marine products for a specific period to allow nature to regenerate.

Although not formally designated as a National Park, this area is de facto protected by the ecological awareness of the villagers. Tourists are strictly prohibited from taking coral, disturbing turtles, or leaving plastic waste on the beach. This self-initiated conservation effort is key to why the coral reefs in Matakus remain healthy amidst the threat of global warming.

Accessibility and Facilities

Reaching Matakus Beach requires an adventurous spirit. The journey begins with a flight to Mathilda Batlayeri Airport in Saumlaki, the capital of Kepulauan Tanimbar Regency. From the center of Saumlaki town, visitors must head to the local harbor and continue the journey by speedboat or wooden motorboat for about 45 to 60 minutes, depending on weather conditions.

Facilities at Matakus Beach are still essential. There are several gazebos or "lopo-lopo" along the beach for relaxation. For accommodation, although there are no star-rated hotels on the island yet, there are homestays managed by local residents. Staying in a homestay offers the added benefit of Tanimbar's signature culinary delights such as fried sweet potato dishes, fresh grilled fish, and appetizing colo-colo chili sauce.

For tourists seeking luxury, it is recommended to stay in Saumlaki and take a day trip to Matakus. However, for those who wish to connect with nature and experience the tranquility of the night under a clearly visible Milky Way without light pollution, staying on Matakus Island is an unforgettable choice.

Matakus Beach is a true representation of the authentic beauty of Eastern Indonesia. It offers a perfect combination of rich marine biodiversity, stunning landscapes, and the sincerity of local culture that remains preserved amidst the currents of modernization.
