Exploring the Geological Wonders of Batu Angus: A Frozen Lava Field at the Foot of Gamalama
Ternate, a volcanic island in North Maluku, is not only known as a historical world spice trade center but also as home to extraordinary geological phenomena. One of the most iconic and unique natural tourist destinations on this island is Batu Angus. Located in Kulaba Village, Ternate Pulau District, this destination offers a surreal landscape that blends the remnants of past volcanic fury with the blue waters of the Maluku Sea.

Historical Traces and Geological Formation
Batu Angus is not just an ordinary pile of rocks. Literally, its name means "Scorched Stone" or "Burnt Stone." This site is a vast expanse of solidified lava flow, a result of the powerful eruptions of Mount Gamalama in 1737 and 1763. The intensely hot lava flowed from the mountain's peak towards the coast, then cooled and hardened into dark black basaltic rock.
The main uniqueness of Batu Angus lies in the texture and shape of its rocks. Visitors will see sharp, porous rock fragments of various sizes stretching widely from the foot of the mountain to the shoreline. The rough surface texture and deep black color create a dramatic contrast against the backdrop of green trees on Gamalama's slopes and the gradient of blue sea in front of it.

Unique Ecosystem and Biodiversity
Despite being dominated by seemingly barren volcanic rocks, Batu Angus possesses an interesting ecosystem. In the crevices of these black rocks, pioneer plants like lichens and several types of shrubs are beginning to grow, indicating an ongoing natural succession process. In some spots, ketapang and coconut trees provide a bit of shade along the edges of the area.
From a fauna perspective, this area is often a transit point for endemic birds of North Maluku. If lucky, visitors may spot sea eagles or shorebirds foraging in the rock crevices during low tide. The clear water around the Batu Angus coast also holds potential for well-preserved marine biodiversity, with small coral reefs beginning to grow on submerged lava foundations beneath the water's surface.

Outdoor Activities and Tourist Experience
Batu Angus offers a different experience compared to typical tropical beaches. Here are some of the main activities that can be enjoyed:
1. Light Trekking on Lava: Visitors can walk along the built pathways on the lava field. The sensation of walking through a labyrinth of sharp black rocks provides a unique challenge and visual perspective.
2. Landscape Photography: This place is a paradise for photographers. The blend of rough black rock textures, the often cloud-covered peak of Mount Gamalama, and the vast sea horizon creates aesthetic and dramatic photographic compositions.
3. Enjoying the Sunrise: Due to its northeast-facing position, Batu Angus is one of the best spots in Ternate to witness the sunrise. The golden morning light illuminating the black rocks creates a very beautiful light reflection.
4. Geological Educational Tour: This site serves as a natural laboratory. Visitors can learn firsthand about igneous rock types and how volcanic activity shapes the morphology of an island.

Best Time to Visit
The best time to visit Batu Angus is in the morning or late afternoon. Considering that most of the area is a black rock expanse that absorbs sunlight, midday temperatures can be very scorching. Arrive around 06:00 WIT to enjoy the sunrise, or around 16:30 WIT to enjoy cooler air while waiting for dusk.
Seasonally, April to October (dry season) is an ideal time as the sky tends to be clear, allowing the peak of Mount Gamalama to be clearly visible without thick fog. However, the beauty of Batu Angus can be enjoyed year-round due to its easy accessibility and the nature of its volcanic rocks, which are not altered by the weather.

Conservation and Environmental Protection
Batu Angus is under the supervision of the local government and conservation agencies. As a geoheritage site, it is crucial for visitors to preserve its integrity. The main rules to follow are not to take or move rock fragments from their location (vandalism) and not to litter among the rocks, as plastic waste is very difficult to clean from deep rock crevices.
Conservation efforts also focus on protecting the natural vegetation growing on the lava to ensure ecological processes continue. Visitor awareness to stay on the provided paths greatly helps in minimizing damage to the fragile rock formations.

Access to Batu Angus is very easy. Located only about 7 to 10 kilometers from the center of Ternate City, the journey can be made in 15-20 minutes by two-wheeled or four-wheeled vehicles. The road to the location is smoothly paved and follows the coastline, offering beautiful views during the trip.
The facilities at this tourist attraction are quite adequate for visitor comfort, including:
