About

Geographical Characteristics and Landscape

Pemandian Krueng Baru is not just an ordinary stream. This river is the estuary of various tributaries sourced directly from the heart of the Gunung Leuser National Park (TNGL). Geographically, this location is dominated by large river rocks (boulders) scattered along the flow, creating small rapids that produce a soothing sound of trickling water.

The water in Krueng Baru is characterized by its exceptional clarity, with a gradient of turquoise green in the deeper parts and crystal clear in the shallow parts. Because it originates from high mountains, the water temperature here remains cool even on hot days. On the left and right sides of the river, visitors will be treated to views of low cliffs covered in dense vegetation, giving an exclusive and hidden impression from the hustle and bustle of the city.

Preserved Ecosystem and Biodiversity

As part of the Leuser foothills ecosystem, Pemandian Krueng Baru is home to various endemic flora and fauna. Giant Meranti trees and other forest woods tower on the riverbanks, forming a natural canopy that shields the bathing area from direct sunlight.

For birdwatchers, this area is a small paradise. Kingfishers with their striking blue plumage are often seen darting over the water's surface to hunt small fish. Among the rocks, the river ecosystem remains preserved with the presence of local fish such as Kerling (Mahseer), which can only live in very clean rivers with strong currents. The presence of these fish is a biological indicator that the water quality in Krueng Baru is still at an excellent level.

Outdoor Activities and Tourist Experience

Pemandian Krueng Baru offers a variety of experiences that are both adrenaline-pumping and soul-relaxing. Here are some of the main activities that can be done:

1. Natural Bathing and Water Therapy: The main activity is, of course, swimming. There are several natural pool spots with varying depths. The shallow edges are very safe for children, while the deeper middle sections are often used by adults to jump from large rocks.

2. Body Rafting and Light Whitewater Rafting: The river's current, which is not too extreme but constant, makes it an ideal place for body rafting. Visitors can follow the river's flow using inner tubes while enjoying the forest scenery along the stream.

3. Nature Photography: The beauty of naturally arranged river rocks combined with the lush green forest makes every corner of Krueng Baru very photogenic. Sunlight filtering through the gaps in the trees (Ray of Light) in the morning is the most sought-after moment by professional photographers.

4. Family Picnics: On the flat riverbanks, many families spread out mats to enjoy local delicacies while listening to the sounds of nature. Cooking or grilling fish on dry firewood over the river rocks is a tradition often practiced by local visitors to enhance intimacy.

Best Time to Visit

To get the maximum experience, the best time to visit Pemandian Krueng Baru is during the dry season, specifically between February and July. During this period, the water discharge tends to be stable and the water clarity reaches its peak. If visiting during the rainy season, the water discharge can increase drastically, and the water tends to become cloudy due to sediment carried from upstream.

Morning around 09:00 WIB is the most recommended time. Besides the air being very fresh, the intensity of sunlight entering the river area creates an extraordinary visual effect on the water's surface.

Accessibility and Supporting Facilities

Pemandian Krueng Baru is located in Kayu Gajah Village, Babahrot District, Aceh Barat Daya. From the center of Blangpidie City (the capital of Abdya), the land journey takes about 45 to 60 minutes via the Meulaboh-Tapaktuan national road. The road access to the location is already quite good and can be traversed by two-wheeled and four-wheeled vehicles.

Facilities around the bathing area are continuously being developed by the local community and the regional government. Currently available:

  • A spacious parking area near the main bridge.
  • Small stalls selling snacks and drinks.
  • Inner tube rentals for water activities.
  • Simple prayer rooms and changing rooms at several access points.

Conservation Status and Environmental Protection

Awareness of the importance of preserving Krueng Baru is continuously being raised. Considering its function as a water source for downstream agriculture and a habitat for river biota, environmental protection efforts are a priority. The local community regularly conducts community work to clean up plastic waste in the tourist area.

Visitors are strictly prohibited from throwing trash into the river or damaging rock formations. Using soap or washing hair directly in the river flow is also highly discouraged to maintain the Kerling fish ecosystem. The preservation of Pemandian Krueng Baru is a shared responsibility so that this beauty can be enjoyed by future generations.

Pemandian Krueng Baru is not just an ordinary water tourism spot; it is a symbol of harmony between humans and the magnificent nature of Aceh. With all its geological uniqueness and biological richness, this destination must be on the list of visits for anyone who wants to experience the purity of nature in the Land of Breuh Sigupai.
