About

An Irreplaceable Ecosystem: From Mangroves to Dipterocarp Forests

Sungai Wain Protected Forest spans approximately 9,782 hectares, encompassing an incredibly unique gradient of ecosystems. The journey here begins from the lush mangrove swamps in the downstream river areas, transitioning to freshwater swamp forests, and finally reaching the majestic dipterocarp hill forests. The primary uniqueness of HLSW lies in its pristine, preserved forest (primary forest), where giant Meranti (Shorea sp.) and Keruing (Dipterocarpus sp.) trees soar up to 40-50 meters, creating a dense canopy that shields the forest floor from direct sunlight.

The presence of the Sungai Wain, flowing for 18.3 kilometers, is the lifeblood of this area. Its clear, yet dark water, characteristic of swamp forest rivers, is a habitat for various aquatic biota and serves as the main drinking water source for Balikpapan residents and the operations of Pertamina's oil refinery.

Biodiversity: Home to the City's Mascot and Rare Primates

The main attraction of Sungai Wain Protected Forest is its status as the natural habitat for Kalimantan's endemic fauna. Fortunate visitors may witness the Sun Bear (Helarctos malayanus) firsthand, which is the official mascot of Balikpapan City. HLSW is one of the few places in the world where sun bears can live freely in their natural habitat.

In addition to sun bears, this area is a reintroduction site for Orangutans (Pongo pygmaeus). Since 1992, dozens of orangutans have been released here, making HLSW one of the best locations for primate observation. You can also encounter Proboscis Monkeys (Nasalis larvatus) with their distinctive long noses in the mangrove areas, and hear the lively calls of Mueller's Gibbons (Hylobates muelleri) in the morning. For birdwatchers, HLSW is a paradise as it is home to 234 bird species, including the Hornbill, which is a symbol of Dayak tribal purity.

Tourist Experience: Penetrating the Jungle's Boundaries

Activities at Sungai Wain Protected Forest are designed to minimize environmental impact while providing in-depth education for visitors. Some of the main experiences include:

1. River Cruise: Using small klotok boats, visitors can cruise along the Sungai Wain. Along the riverbanks, the sight of gnarled mangrove roots and nipa palms creates a mystical and tranquil atmosphere. This is the best way to spot proboscis monkeys and water birds.

2. Interpretive Trail Trekking: There are several trekking trail options, ranging from short paths on wooden boardwalks to expedition trails that penetrate the primary forest. Trails ranging from 400 meters to 3 kilometers are available for those who want to see pitcher plants (Nepenthes), various types of wild orchids, and exotic fungi.

3. Observation Tower Viewing: HLSW has an observation tower that allows visitors to view the expanse of the forest canopy from above. From here, the gradient of green hues of the forest contrasts with the blue Kalimantan sky.

Conservation Status and Environmental Protection

HLSW is managed collaboratively by the Balikpapan City Government and the Sungai Wain Protected Forest Management Agency (BP-HLSW). Its status as a protected forest is crucial due to its function as a catchment area. Protection of this area is very strict to prevent forest encroachment and illegal hunting. Visitors are required to adhere to the "Leave No Trace" principle, meaning not to leave any trash, not to take any flora, and not to disturb the tranquility of the fauna. Education about the importance of preserving tropical forests is a main agenda in every tour guided by local rangers.

Best Time to Visit

The best time to visit Sungai Wain Protected Forest is during the dry season between May and September. During this period, the trekking trails are drier and less slippery, and fauna activity is easier to observe. If you want to see the phenomenon of forest flowers blooming, visit during the seasonal transition. However, keep in mind that humidity within the forest is always high, so physical preparation and appropriate gear are essential.

Accessibility and Facilities

Sungai Wain Protected Forest is located on Jalan Soekarno-Hatta KM 15, Karang Joang, Balikpapan Utara. Its location is quite accessible by land vehicle, about a 30-45 minute drive from Balikpapan City center or Sultan Aji Muhammad Sulaiman Sepinggan International Airport.

  • Researcher's Lodge: Simple accommodation is available for researchers or wildlife photographers who wish to spend more time within the area.
  • Parking Area and Toilets: Basic facilities that are kept clean at the entrance gate.

Visiting Sungai Wain Protected Forest is a spiritual journey back to nature. Amidst the rapid modernization of East Kalimantan, HLSW stands tall as a reminder of the rich past that must be passed on to the future. For nature lovers, adventurers, and researchers, this destination offers more than just scenery; it offers an understanding of how precious every inch of rainforest is for human survival.
