Exploring Kawah Wurung: The Hidden Emerald of the Ijen Highlands, Bondowoso

Kawah Wurung is a natural masterpiece located in Jampit Village, Sempol District (now Ijen District), Bondowoso Regency, East Java. Unlike its famous neighbor, Kawah Ijen, known for its acidic lake and blue fire phenomenon, Kawah Wurung offers a contrasting aesthetic charm. In Javanese, "Wurung" means "canceled" or "not happening." This name refers to the crater's geological formation, which is not filled with water or erupted into an active volcano, but instead forms a giant basin covered by vast expanses of green grass.

Landscape and Geological Characteristics

Visually, Kawah Wurung is often dubbed the "New Zealand of Java." This destination is part of the Ijen Biosphere Reserve, recognized by UNESCO. Its main characteristic is the circular hills forming a dead crater with a base covered by shrubs and short grass.

The topography of Kawah Wurung is dominated by rolling hills known by local tourists as "Teletubbies Hill." This crater basin has a significant depth with steep slopes that are covered in green during the rainy season and turn into an exotic golden yellow during the dry season. From the hilltops surrounding the crater, visitors can witness the majestic silhouettes of Mount Raung and Mount Ijen standing tall as a backdrop, creating a contrast between the softness of the grassy hills and the grandeur of the volcanoes.

Unique Ecosystem and Biodiversity

Although dominated by grasslands (savanna), Kawah Wurung possesses a rich highland ecosystem. Its fertile soil, resulting from volcanic material deposits from ancient Ijen activity, supports the growth of various mountain grasses and wildflowers. In the morning, the area is often shrouded in thick fog, providing moisture for the local vegetation.

Around this area, visitors can still encounter some typical Javanese mountain fauna, such as Javanese eagles occasionally soaring in the sky, and herds of livestock belonging to local residents released to graze. The presence of pine trees on the trekking path leading to the crater provides shelter for small birds and adds to the biodiversity in the transition zone between mountain forests and open savanna.

Outdoor Activities and Tourist Experience

Kawah Wurung is not just a destination for photos, but a natural playground for adventure lovers. Some of the main activities available include:

1. Soft Trekking: The path from the parking area to the main hilltop, known as "Tanjakan Cinta" (Love's Ascent), offers a light yet satisfying physical challenge. This path provides a 360-degree view of the entire crater area.

2. Paragliding: Due to stable wind currents and the open contour of the hills without many large tree obstructions, Kawah Wurung is often a location for paragliding athletes and enthusiasts to take flight.

3. Mountain Biking: The undulating terrain and dirt paths around the crater are a favorite for mountain biking communities. Exploring the crater's edges by bike provides a sense of freedom amidst the open nature.

4. Camping: There is a designated area for setting up tents. Spending a night in Kawah Wurung allows tourists to witness a very clear milky way due to minimal light pollution, and enjoy the sunrise moment that casts pink hues behind Ijen's peak.

Best Time to Visit

Kawah Wurung has two different "faces" depending on the season. If you desire lush green scenery like European grasslands, visit during the rainy season between December and April. During this period, the entire crater surface will be covered in very fresh green grass.

Conversely, if you prefer a dramatic African savanna ambiance, visit during the dry season between August and October. The grass will dry out and turn yellowish-brown, creating an artistic arid impression under a clear blue sky. The best times to visit in a day are dawn (05:00) to catch the sunrise, or in the afternoon (16:00) when the sunlight begins to soften and create long shadows among the hill's curves.

Conservation and Environmental Protection

As part of the Ijen Geopark, Kawah Wurung is under strict supervision regarding its environmental preservation. The Bondowoso local government, along with Perhutani (State Forestry Corporation), strives to ensure that tourism activities do not damage the savanna ecosystem. Visitors are strictly prohibited from littering or engaging in activities that could trigger forest fires, especially during the dry season when dry grass is highly flammable. Awareness of "Leave No Trace" is highly emphasized for every tourist camping here.

Accessibility and Facilities

Reaching Kawah Wurung requires a journey of approximately 2 hours from the center of Bondowoso city. The road to the location is well-paved but has many steep ascents and sharp turns, so vehicles must be in prime condition. The journey to the location will pass through pine forests and the aromatic Jampit coffee plantations, which add value to the trip.

Facilities at Kawah Wurung have seen significant improvements. There is a spacious parking area, public toilets, gazebos for resting, and several local stalls serving authentic Bondowoso coffee and snacks. For those seeking more comfortable accommodation, there are several guesthouses or homestays owned by locals in the nearby village, as well as a historic Dutch-era guest house in the Jampit plantation area.

Kawah Wurung is proof that natural grandeur doesn't always have to be a high peak or an active crater. The tranquility, the eye-soothing green expanse, and the mountain breeze at this place offer a meditative experience that is hard to find at other tourist destinations. For anyone visiting East Java, taking the time to stop by this "canceled crater" is the best way to admire the calm side of Earth's volcanic activity.
