The name "Beras Basah" has a unique origin; it is said to come from a ship carrying rice from Sulawesi to Bontang that sank in these waters. The spilled rice then formed a mound and turned white, metaphorically describing the expanse of white sand on this island.

The most striking characteristic of this island is the presence of a tall lighthouse towering in the middle of the island. To reach Beras Basah Island, tourists must first go to Bontang City. From the center of Bontang City, there are several main departure points:

• Tanjung Laut Pier: This is the most popular point. Tourists can rent modified fishing boats specifically for passengers.
• Bontang Kuala Pier: This point offers a slightly longer journey but passes through unique mangrove forest areas and floating settlements.

The sea journey takes approximately 45 minutes to 1 hour, depending on current and weather conditions. Along the way, visitors will be treated to the sight of large industrial refineries belonging to PT Badak NGL and PT Pupuk Kaltim standing majestically on the coast of Bontang, providing an interesting contrast between industrial progress and natural beauty.

The best time to visit Beras Basah Island is during the dry season, which is between April and September. During this period, the sky is usually clear, and the sea conditions are very clear with calm waves, ideal for snorkeling activities.

It is highly recommended to arrive at the departure pier by 07:00 WITA to enjoy the island's atmosphere when it is still quiet and the sun is not too strong. Avoid visiting during long weekends if you desire tranquility, as the island will be very crowded with local tourists.

Conservation and Environmental Protection

As a tourist destination based on natural wealth, environmental preservation is a crucial issue on Beras Basah Island. The coral reef ecosystem here is very vulnerable to physical damage from ship anchors or human touch.

Currently, awareness is growing to limit the use of single-use plastics on this island. Tourists are strongly urged to bring their trash back to Bontang mainland. Conservation efforts are also carried out through coral reef restoration (transplantation) at several points that have experienced bleaching.
