About

Geographical Landscape and Iconic Natural Features

Tigi Lake is situated at an altitude of approximately 1,700 meters above sea level (mdpl), making it one of Indonesia's most enchanting highland lakes. Topographically, the lake is surrounded by green hills and the sturdy Mount Deiyai standing as a majestic natural backdrop. The lake's water tends to be a deep blue, reflecting the white clouds that often hang low on the water's surface due to the cold temperatures.

One of Tigi Lake's unique features is the presence of small islands in its center. The most prominent is Duamo Island. This island is not just land in the water, but a central point of aesthetics and spirituality for the local community. The lake's coastline is not uniform; in some areas, there are gentle slopes with green grass, while on other sides, limestone cliffs and dense forests directly border the water's edge.

Unique Ecosystem and Biodiversity

Tigi Lake's ecosystem is home to various endemic species rarely found elsewhere. One of the most famous biological treasures of this lake is the Rainbow Fish (Melanotaenia) and several types of freshwater crayfish (Cherax) which are both a food commodity and an ecological pride of Deiyai. The freshwater crayfish, named so because of their claw shape resembling crab claws, have very soft and sweet meat and live in the cold crevices of the lakebed rocks.

In the surrounding forests that encircle the lake, the vegetation of the mountainous tropical rainforest is still very dense. Araucaria trees and various types of forest orchids thrive here. The presence of endemic birds of Papua, such as Birds of Paradise in the higher forest areas and various types of water birds along the lake's edge, makes this area a paradise for birdwatchers.

Outdoor Experiences and Activities

Visiting Tigi Lake is not just about seeing the scenery, but about experiencing the harmonious interaction between humans and nature. Here are some activities that can be done:

1. Traditional Boat Expedition: Tourists can rent wooden boats or "Kole-Kole" from Mee tribe fishermen to circle the lake. Exploring every corner of the lake by traditional boat offers a different perspective on the vastness of this basin.

2. Exploring Duamo Island: Stopping at Duamo Island is a must. On this island, visitors can climb a small hill to get a 360-degree view of the entire surface of Tigi Lake.

3. Fishing with Locals: You can learn traditional fishing techniques using nets or small spears. Interacting with local fishermen provides insight into how they maintain the balance of fish populations in the lake.

4. Landscape Photography: With the thin mist that often descends in the morning and the fading sunlight behind Mount Deiyai at dusk, Tigi Lake is an endless subject for photography.

Best Time to Visit and Seasonal Variations

The weather conditions in Deiyai are heavily influenced by the mountain climate. The best time to visit Tigi Lake is during the dry season, between May and September. During this period, the sky tends to be clearer, allowing Mount Deiyai to be clearly visible without being covered by thick fog.

However, visitors should still be prepared for very cold temperatures, especially at night, which can drop below 10 degrees Celsius. In the morning, the lake's surface is often covered by thick mist, creating a mystical atmosphere that is beautiful to enjoy while sipping local Papua coffee.

Conservation Status and Environmental Protection

As the primary source of life for the Mee tribe in Deiyai, Tigi Lake is subject to very strict customary laws in maintaining its cleanliness. The local community prohibits the indiscriminate disposal of waste into the lake because they still use lake water for their daily needs.

Administratively, the Deiyai Regency government continues to strive to promote Tigi Lake as a sustainable ecotourism destination. Protection efforts are focused on preventing sedimentation due to land clearing around the hills and protecting the freshwater crayfish species from over-exploitation. Tourists are strongly encouraged to comply with local regulations, including not bringing plastic waste and respecting areas considered sacred by the indigenous people.

Accessibility and Facilities

Reaching Tigi Lake requires an adventurous spirit. The main access is usually by air to Nabire Airport on the coast of Central Papua. From Nabire, the journey continues by land using a four-wheel-drive vehicle (4WD) along the winding Trans Papua road through forests and mountains. The land journey takes approximately 5 to 7 hours, but the fatigue will be rewarded with extraordinary views along the way.

In Deiyai, especially in Tigi district which is the center of activities, several simple accommodations (homestays) and government-managed guesthouses are available. Public facilities such as traditional markets, eateries serving local cuisine, and a small pier are already available. Although the facilities are not as luxurious as tourist destinations in western Indonesia, the authenticity and hospitality of the Deiyai people offer a unique and invaluable luxury.

Tigi Lake is not just a tourist destination; it is a representation of the tranquility and power of Central Papua's nature. For those seeking an escape from the city crowds and wishing to connect with pristine nature, Tigi Lake in Deiyai is the perfect answer.
