Exploring the Wonders of Pusentasi: A Giant Sea Well in the Heart of Donggala
Central Sulawesi holds a stunning geological anomaly on the coast of Donggala Regency. Known as the Donggala Sea Center or "Pusentasi" in the local Kaili language (from the word Pusen meaning center and Tasi meaning sea), this destination is no ordinary beach. Pusentasi is a natural giant well formed from coral rock formations, whose waters are directly connected to the open sea through mysterious underground tunnels.

Unique Geological Characteristics
The Donggala Sea Center is located in Towale Village, Banawa Tengah District. Visually, this tourist attraction is a perfectly circular hole with a diameter of about 10 meters and a depth of up to 7 meters. The walls of this hole consist of solid karst and ancient coral rocks, with a dark gray color that contrasts with the clarity of the water within.
The unique phenomenon of Pusentasi is its water. Although it is on land and separated by tens of meters from the coastline, the water inside this well is saltwater. The water level inside the well will rise and fall following the tidal cycles of the Makassar Strait. This proves the existence of an underwater cave network connecting the bottom of the well to the ocean beyond. The clarity of the water allows visitors to see the white sandy bottom of the well and occasionally spot small fish trapped or swimming in from the sea through the coral crevices.

Coastal Ecosystem and Biodiversity
The area around the Donggala Sea Center is surrounded by a well-preserved coastal ecosystem. Around the coral cliffs, typical coastal vegetation that is resistant to high salinity grows. If you walk a little further towards the beach, which is only a stone's throw away, you will find stretches of fine white sand and rows of towering coconut trees.
The biodiversity within this well is indeed limited to small coral fish species, but in the surrounding sea waters, Donggala's underwater richness is very famous. The coral reefs around Banawa are part of the world's Coral Triangle, making them home to various types of hard and soft corals, as well as marine life such as turtles and various types of nudibranchs.

Tourist Experience and Outdoor Activities
The main attraction at Pusentasi is the adrenaline-pumping activity: jumping from the well's edge. Visitors, especially local youths, often perform free-diving stunts from a height of about 5-7 meters directly into the blue water at the bottom of the well. The sufficient water depth makes this activity relatively safe for those who are skilled swimmers.
For visitors who prefer tranquility, a leisurely swim in the well offers a different sensation compared to swimming in the open sea. The water feels cooler because it is protected by stone walls, but it still has the high buoyancy characteristic of seawater. Besides swimming in the well, visitors can:
1. Snorkeling at Towale Beach: Explore the color gradient of the water from turquoise to deep blue at the beach located right next to the Sea Center.
2. Landscape Photography: Capture exotic coral rock formations and the color contrast between the rocks, water, and the bright Sulawesi sky.
3. Local Culinary Tourism: Enjoy Donggala's signature dishes like Kaledo (beef leg soup) which are widely sold around the tourist area.

Best Time to Visit
To get the best visual experience, the recommended time is when the sun is directly overhead, around 11:00 AM to 2:00 PM WITA (Central Indonesian Time). During these hours, sunlight will penetrate directly to the bottom of the well, creating a stunning light effect in the water.
Seasonally, April to October (dry season) is the ideal time. During this period, the water in the well tends to be clearer due to minimal sediment carried by rainwater, and the sea conditions in the Makassar Strait are generally calm, making travel to Donggala easier.

Conservation and Environmental Protection Efforts
As a unique geological site, the preservation of Pusentasi heavily relies on visitor awareness. The karst rocks surrounding the well are very susceptible to erosion and damage if not cared for. The local government and the community of Towale Village actively maintain the cleanliness of this area from plastic waste.
It is important for tourists not to throw anything into the well, as the underground structure connected to the sea can become clogged or cause pollution that damages the micro-ecosystem within. Protection of the coral reefs on the surrounding beaches is also a priority to ensure the natural function of Pusentasi as part of the marine hydrological system remains intact.

Accessibility and Supporting Facilities
The Donggala Sea Center is located approximately 45 kilometers from Palu City, the capital of Central Sulawesi Province. The land journey can be completed in about 1 to 1.5 hours using two-wheeled or four-wheeled vehicles. The route offers beautiful views of the Palu Bay coast, with relatively smooth and winding roads following the coastline.
The facilities at the location are quite adequate to support tourist comfort, including:
- Spacious parking area.
- Changing rooms and public toilets for rinsing after swimming.
- Gazebos or baruga for relaxing by the well.
- Small stalls selling snacks and fresh young coconuts.
- Lodging/homestays in the Towale Village area for visitors who wish to stay overnight.
The Donggala Sea Center is not just a recreational spot, but a natural monument that shows how dynamic the geology of Sulawesi Island is. The wonder of this saltwater well offers a perfect blend of adventure, visual beauty, and natural tranquility that is hard to find elsewhere in the world. Preserving its sustainability is the duty of every visitor so that future generations can still witness the "center" of the sea trapped in the embrace of Donggala's coral.
