In the area near the shoreline, visitors will feel coarse white sand grains, like peppercorns. However, as you walk closer to the shallow sea area, the sand texture drastically changes to be very fine, resembling powder or wet cement.

This textural change creates the sensation of walking on a natural velvet expanse. When the sea recedes, the dry beach area extends hundreds of meters towards the sea, revealing artistic sediment patterns on the shallow seabed.

The Unique Ecosystem of "Dancing Mangroves"

The main attraction that has made Walakiri Beach world-renowned is the presence of dwarf mangrove forests on the western side of the beach. Unlike typical mangroves that grow upright and lush, the Avicennia marina trees here grow with artistically twisting trunks. The curvature of these tree trunks is not without scientific reason. Adaptation to strong winds from the Indian Ocean and the specific soil substrate conditions in this area cause non-linear trunk growth. When the sea level begins to rise, these twisting trunks are partially submerged, creating perfect reflections on the calm water surface. This ecosystem also serves as a habitat for various small crustaceans and coastal birds foraging among the mangrove prop roots.

To get the best experience, visits are highly recommended between May and October, which coincides with the dry season in NTT. During this period, Sumba's skies tend to be clear without clouds, providing maximum visibility for watching the sunset.

Specifically, visitors should monitor the sea tide tables. The best mangrove photography is achieved when the tide is "receding towards high tide" (around 5:00 PM - 6:00 PM WITA). If the tide is too low, the mangrove roots will appear dry and lose their water reflection effect. Conversely, if the tide is too high, the unique curves of the tree trunks will be submerged.

Conservation Status and Environmental Protection

As part of East Sumba's natural wealth, the mangrove ecosystem at Walakiri is under the attention of the local government and community. Mangroves play a crucial role as a natural barrier against coastal erosion and as an effective carbon sink.

Tourists are strictly prohibited from climbing or hanging on the branches of the dancing mangrove trees, as the structure of these dwarf trees is quite fragile and their growth is very slow. Awareness about not littering plastic waste on the beach is also continuously promoted, considering that ocean currents often bring debris that can damage the aesthetics and health of the mangrove ecosystem.

Accessibility and Supporting Facilities

Walakiri Beach has relatively easy accessibility compared to other destinations in Sumba which tend to be remote. Located about 24 kilometers east of Waingapu, the capital of East Sumba, the journey can be made in 30 to 45 minutes by motorcycle or rented car. The road to the location is smoothly paved with savanna views on the left and right sides.

The facilities around the beach are quite adequate for tourist comfort:

1. Parking Area: Sufficiently spacious near the beach entrance.

2. Local Warungs: There is a row of stalls selling fresh young coconuts, instant noodles, and coffee while waiting for sunset.
