Architecturally, HeHa Ocean View adopts a Contemporary Tropical Terracing style. Its primary design principle is the "conquest" of topography without erasing the original character of Gunungkidul's limestone. Unlike conventional buildings that stand on flat land, HeHa's structure is built on extremely steep cliffs directly facing the Indian Ocean.

The architects behind this project designed visitor circulation vertically and in tiered (separated) levels. This design ensures that each building level has an unobstructed sightline towards the sea. The use of sharp geometric lines on balconies and observation decks creates an attractive visual contrast with the organic curves of the karst cliffs below.

Historical Context and Land Transformation

The development of HeHa Ocean View began with a vision to transform barren, rocky land on the outskirts of Gunungkidul into a high economic value public space. Historically, the Girikarto area was difficult to access with limited infrastructure. Construction began with significant logistical challenges, as materials had to be mobilized to the edge of the ravine.

The construction process involved very careful cut and fill techniques to ensure structural stability on the porous limestone soil. This transformation became an important milestone in the history of commercial architecture in Yogyakarta, where the focus shifted from temple-based cultural tourism to contemporary design-based landscape tourism.

Structural and Material Innovation

One of the most striking elements is the use of lightweight yet strong materials for the observation deck structures. Considering the immense wind loads from the Indian Ocean, architects used a combination of stainless steel frames and reinforced concrete embedded deep into the bedrock.

Structural innovation is evident in the cantilevered platforms that jut out from the cliff edge. These structures give visitors a sensation of floating. Furthermore, the use of transparent materials like tempered glass for the railings aims to minimize visual barriers between visitors and the horizon. For the flooring, composite wood material was chosen for its resistance to saltwater corrosion, providing a warm touch amidst the dominance of hard materials like concrete and steel.

HeHa Ocean View was designed with an Instagrammable Architecture approach, where every corner of the building is treated as a photo frame. Some unique elements include:

1. The White House: A minimalist white structure that contrasts with the blue sea, creating a Santorini-like aesthetic with local adaptation.

2. Hexagon Pillars: The use of geometric shapes like hexagons in the commercial areas adds a modernist dimension to the site.

3. Reflective Pools: Shallow pools strategically placed to create reflections of the sky, enhancing the sense of vastness and merging artificial water elements with the distant sea.

4. Lighting Design: At night, HeHa's architecture transforms through a warm white lighting scheme that highlights the cliff textures and building lines, making it a visual beacon on the dark southern coast.

Cultural and Social Significance

Socially, the presence of HeHa Ocean View has changed the paradigm of local architecture. It has become a symbol of Gunungkidul's modernization. This building not only functions as a recreational venue but also as an economic catalyst for the surrounding Girikarto community. The employment of local labor in its operations has a significant social impact, shifting livelihoods from traditional agriculture to the tourism service sector.

Visitor Experience and Spatial Circulation

The spatial experience at HeHa Ocean View begins from the elevated parking area, followed by a descent using a shuttle or a walk along winding paths. The architects designed a dynamic movement flow; visitors are not immediately presented with the main view but are guided through corridors and stairs that create a sense of discovery.

Each floor offers different functions, from open-air culinary areas, performance stages, to relaxation zones with bean bags. All these functions are integrated into a cohesive, flowing design. The sound of waves crashing against the cliffs below serves as an auditory element that complements the architectural visual experience.

Sustainability and Climate Adaptation

Given its location exposed to extreme weather, sustainability is key. The building design maximizes natural ventilation through open corridors, reducing the need for mechanical air conditioning. A clean water management system is also specifically designed to address water scarcity in the karst region, including the use of large storage tanks and filtration systems.

HeHa Ocean View is a prime example of how architecture can bridge geographical challenges and modern aesthetic needs. With its success in blending rigid steel structures with the softness of the sea panorama, this building remains the most influential coastal architectural icon in Yogyakarta today.
