History and Development of Kotawaringin Timur: Traces of Civilization on the Banks of the Mentaya River

Kotawaringin Timur, with an area of 15,630.72 km², is one of the most important historical pillars in Central Kalimantan Province. This regency, with its capital in Sampit, holds a strategic position in the central region of Kalimantan, bordering the Java Sea to the south and neighboring Katingan, Seruyan, and Kotawaringin Barat Regencies.

##

Historical Roots and the Era of Kingdoms

The historical traces of Kotawaringin Timur are inseparable from the influence of the Banjar Sultanate and the establishment of the Kotawaringin Kingdom in the 17th century. Historically, the Sampit region was mentioned in the Kakawin Nagarakretagama (1365) as "Sampit." This name refers to an old settlement along the Mentaya River. In the mid-16th century, Islam began to enter massively through the da'wah of traders and ulama, which then strengthened the social structure of the Coastal Dayak and Malay communities in this region.

##

Colonial Era and People's Resistance

During the Dutch colonial era, Sampit became a vital export port for timber and forest products. Administratively, based on the Contract met den Sultan van Bandjermasin in 1817, this region began to be under the political supervision of the Dutch East Indies. However, the spirit of resistance never faded. One of the legendary figures who ignited nationalist sentiment was Haji Ikap, who played a crucial role in consolidating local strength against Dutch hegemony on the Mentaya coast. The strategic position of Sampit Port made it a fiercely contested economic point for centuries.

##

Independence Era and the Formation of the Regency

After the proclamation of Indonesian independence on August 17, 1945, political dynamics in Central Kalimantan intensified. Kotawaringin Timur was officially formed as a regency on January 7, 1953, based on Emergency Law No. 3 of 1953. The development of this region was pioneered by local figures such as Tjilik Riwut, who later became the first Governor of Central Kalimantan. During this period, Sampit transformed from merely a timber port town into a modern administrative center in the heart of the Kalimantan rainforest.

##

Cultural Heritage and Local Identity

The rich history of Kotawaringin Timur is reflected in its heterogeneous community culture. The tradition of Simah Laut (a thanksgiving ritual for coastal communities) and Mandi Safar on the Mentaya River are hereditary legacies that are still preserved. Furthermore, historical sites like Rumah Betang Tumbang Gagu, built in 1870 by Singa Kenting, stand as evidence of magnificent Dayak traditional architecture capable of housing dozens of families communally.

##

Modernization and Reconciliation

In the course of modern history, Kotawaringin Timur experienced a dark period during the ethnic conflict in 2001. However, through the spirit of the Falsafah Huma Betang, the community succeeded in reconciliation and rebuilding social harmony. As a symbol of peace and history, the Tugu Perdamaian (Peace Monument) was erected in Sampit. Today, Kotawaringin Timur stands as a major economic center in Central Kalimantan, relying on the palm oil plantation sector and service industries, without abandoning its historical roots as a maritime gateway in the heart of Kalimantan.
