About

Geographical Characteristics and Landscape

Geographically, Saronde Island has an area of approximately 8 hectares, with nearly 80% of its territory surrounded by stretches of very fine white sand. The main uniqueness of its landscape is the presence of a "sand tongue" or sandbar that extends towards the sea, especially when the tide is low. This phenomenon creates an extraordinary color contrast between the white calcite of the sand and the water's color gradients from transparent turquoise blue to deep blue in the trench areas.

Unlike the surrounding islands which may be dominated by sharp coral cliffs, Saronde has a topography that tends to be gentle in the coastal areas but has lush vegetation in its central part. Here, tall coconut trees are interspersed with sea pine trees (Casuarina equisetifolia) that provide natural shade, creating a cool microclimate despite being in the middle of the equatorial heat.

Unique Ecosystem and Biodiversity

Saronde Island is part of a marine conservation area rich in biodiversity. The waters surrounding the island are inhabited by a fringing reef ecosystem. You can find various types of hard corals such as Acropora and soft corals that are home to thousands of marine life.

One of the biological unique features here is the presence of blue starfish (Linckia laevigata) scattered in the shallow areas. Furthermore, Saronde's waters also serve as a migration route for green turtles and hawksbill turtles. On the land side, the island is a habitat for various types of seabirds and shorebirds that utilize the dense pine trees for nesting. Its pristine ecosystem makes Saronde a very valuable natural laboratory for environmental observers.

Outdoor Activities and Tourist Experience

Saronde offers a wide spectrum of activities for nature lovers:

1. Snorkeling and Diving: The clarity of the water around Saronde allows for a visibility of up to 15-20 meters. Tourists can explore the "underwater garden" just a few meters from the beach. For professional divers, there are several dive sites around the island offering wall dive views.

2. Island Hopping: Saronde is surrounded by neighboring islands such as Bogisa Island, Mohinggito Island, and Huha Island. Tourists can rent traditional boats to explore these islands, each with its own unique characteristics, such as Bogisa Island which has a very iconic long coastline.

3. Nature and Astronomy Photography: Thanks to minimal light pollution, Saronde Island is a perfect location for astrophotography. On a clear night, the Milky Way can be clearly seen stretching across the island's sky.

4. Canoeing and Paddleboarding: The calm waters of the bay allow visitors to circle the island by canoe, enjoying the seabed view directly from above the glass-clear surface of the water.

Best Time to Visit

The best time to visit Saronde Island is during the dry season, which typically runs from April to September. During this period, the sea tends to be calm with small waves, making it ideal for water activities and crossings from the harbor.

For those who wish to witness specific natural phenomena, August is often the time when water clarity reaches its peak. However, it should be noted that due to its location north of the equator, the weather can change at any time, so it is highly recommended to always monitor the local BMKG weather forecast before making a crossing.

Conservation and Environmental Protection

As a natural tourist destination, the management of Saronde Island strongly emphasizes the principle of sustainability. Local governments and private managers have implemented strict regulations regarding waste disposal and the prohibition of taking coral reefs or marine life as souvenirs.

Conservation efforts also involve regular beach clean-ups and education for local fishermen on the importance of protecting coral ecosystems from destructive fishing methods. Tourists are strongly encouraged to use environmentally friendly products (such as coral-safe sunblock) to maintain the chemical integrity of Saronde's waters.

Accessibility and Facilities

To reach Saronde Island, the journey begins from Jalaluddin Airport in Gorontalo. From the airport, the land journey takes approximately 1 to 1.5 hours to Kwandang Port in North Gorontalo. From the port, the journey continues by speedboat or traditional motorboat for 30 to 45 minutes.

Although the concept is wilderness tourism, the facilities on Saronde Island are quite adequate for tourist comfort. There are traditional stilt-house style cottages or accommodations built directly over the water or on the beach, allowing visitors to experience sleeping with the sound of waves. In addition, there is a restaurant serving fresh seafood, shower facilities, and snorkeling equipment rental.

Saronde Island is a tangible testament to the beauty of North Sulawesi's coast. With its endless white sand, calming crystal-clear waters, and commitment to nature conservation, this destination offers a perfect escape from the hustle and bustle of modern life into the embrace of pure nature. A visit to Saronde is not just about enjoying the scenery, but also about appreciating and preserving one of Indonesia's last fragments of tropical paradise.
