About
Geological Charm and Tropical Forest Landscape
Tembinus Waterfall is not just an ordinary stream of water. Visually, this waterfall offers a dramatic view with a cascade height of approximately 25 to 30 meters. Its main uniqueness lies in its circular rock wall structure, resembling a natural amphitheater. This rock wall is dark in color, contrasting with the white foam of the water that crashes into the pool below.
The flowing water originates from the upstream of a river that crosses a primary forest area, ensuring clarity and a very cold water temperature. Beneath the waterfall's cascade, a large natural pool with varying depths has formed. This natural architecture is surrounded by dense tropical rainforest vegetation, creating a humid yet refreshing atmosphere typical of the Kalimantan interior.
Ecosystem and Biodiversity Richness
Located within the concession area of PT ITCI Hutani Manunggal (IHM), Tembinus Waterfall is in a zone where the ecosystem is still very well-preserved. The forest around the waterfall is home to various endemic flora and fauna of Kalimantan. Lucky visitors can often hear the calls of the Owa-Owa (Hylobates muelleri) or see the flapping wings of Hornbills crossing the forest canopy.
The forest floor around the trekking path to the waterfall is filled with various types of ancient ferns, mosses covering slippery rocks, and large Meranti and Ulin trees towering towards the sky. This biodiversity adds value for botany enthusiasts and birdwatchers who want to experience an authentic Kalimantan rainforest.
Outdoor Experience and Activities
Visiting Tembinus Waterfall is about the journey, not just the destination. The main activity offered is soft trekking. Visitors must walk along a path that cuts through the forest. During the journey, the sense of hearing will be pampered by a symphony of nature consisting of the sounds of forest insects and the gurgling of small rivers.
Upon reaching the main spot, swimming in the natural pool is a must-do activity. The mineral-rich water provides a relaxing sensation for muscles tired after a long journey. Additionally, for photography enthusiasts, Tembinus Waterfall offers very photogenic angles, especially when sunlight penetrates the gaps in the tree canopy (ray of light) and creates small rainbows above the waterfall's mist.
For those who love tranquility, meditating by the waterfall while listening to the sound of the falling water is the best way to de-stress. The very calm atmosphere, far from cellular signals and city noise, makes this place a perfect digital detox destination.
Accessibility and Travel Challenges
Tembinus Waterfall is located in Sepaku District, Penajam Paser Utara Regency. The journey to this location requires physical preparation and a capable vehicle. From the IKN government center or from Balikpapan, the journey takes about 3 to 4 hours.
The main challenge is navigating the timber company's operational roads, which are made of compacted earth and rocks. It is highly recommended to use a 4WD (Four-Wheel Drive) vehicle, especially during unpredictable weather. It should be noted that this area is a restricted zone, so visitors are usually required to report themselves or coordinate with local company security before entering the waterfall area.
Facilities at the location are still very minimal and natural. There are no food stalls or luxury accommodations around the waterfall. This, in fact, preserves the authenticity of the place, but requires visitors to bring their own provisions and take their trash back with them.
Best Time and Seasonal Variations
Choosing the right time to visit is crucial at Tembinus Waterfall. The best time to visit is at the end of the rainy season or the beginning of the dry season (around May to July). During this period, the waterfall's flow is very stable—not too dry and not too strong to be dangerous.
During the peak of the rainy season, the water flow can increase sharply, and the water tends to turn brownish due to carrying mud sediment from upstream. Additionally, the dirt road access to the location will become very slippery and dangerous. Conversely, during a prolonged dry season, the water flow may decrease, but the clarity of the water will be at its maximum, revealing the rocky bottom of the pool.
Conservation and Environmental Protection
As a destination located in a forestry industrial area and close to the new government center, conservation issues are a top priority at Tembinus Waterfall. Its status as a local "protected forest" within the industrial area helps protect this area from illegal logging.
The local government and management are continuously striving to maintain the balance between tourism potential and environmental sustainability. Visitors are expected to apply the Leave No Trace principle. Considering its location as a source of clean water for the ecosystem below, the use of soap or chemicals when bathing in the natural pool is strictly prohibited.
Conclusion: Natural Heritage for the Future
Tembinus Waterfall is a reminder that amidst the massive development of East Kalimantan, nature still plays a vital role as the lungs and source of beauty. This destination offers a mystical and grand experience that only the Kalimantan forest can provide. For true adventurers, Tembinus is not just a tourist spot, but a tribute to the natural wealth of the archipelago that must be preserved for future generations.
