About

Geographical Characteristics and Natural Uniqueness

SKPC Waterfall is not just an ordinary cascade of water. Morphologically, this waterfall has a unique tiered structure, flowing over sedimentary rocks formed over thousands of years. Unlike waterfalls in high mountains that usually have a sharp, plunging water flow, SKPC Waterfall offers a wider, creeping flow over stone steps, creating a visual effect like a white water curtain contrasting with the green moss around it.

The height of this waterfall ranges from 10 to 15 meters, but its main attraction lies in its width and the natural pool formed beneath it. The water originates from the upstream river that crosses the Subulussalam protected forest area, so the water temperature remains cool and refreshing, providing a natural therapeutic effect for anyone who bathes in it.

Tropical Forest Ecosystem and Biodiversity

The area around SKPC Waterfall is surrounded by dense tropical rainforest vegetation. This ecosystem is home to various endemic flora of Aceh. Visitors can find various types of meranti trees, lush forest ferns, and wild orchids that occasionally bloom among the branches of large trees. The high humidity around the waterfall creates a microclimate that supports the growth of mosses and ferns, giving an exotic "ancient forest" impression.

In terms of fauna, if you are lucky or visit when the atmosphere is quiet, the chirping of hornbills and the splashing of local river fish will accompany your journey. The presence of forest insects such as butterflies with striking color patterns also adds to the biodiversity richness in this area, making it an ideal location for macro photographers and nature lovers.

Outdoor Experiences and Activities

SKPC Waterfall offers a variety of activities that are both adrenaline-pumping and mind-relaxing. Here are some experiences you can enjoy:

1. Swimming in the Natural Pool: The bottom of the waterfall pool is not too deep in some areas, making it relatively safe for swimming. The pressure of the water falling from a height provides an effective natural massage (hydrotherapy) to relax tense muscles.

2. Nature Photography: With an artistic rocky cliff backdrop and a curtain of water, this place is a paradise for photographers. Long exposure techniques are highly recommended to capture the softness of the water flow here.

3. Family Picnics: Around the river flow after the waterfall, there are flat areas often used by tourists to lay out mats and enjoy packed meals while listening to the roar of the water.

4. Forest Exploration (Soft Trekking): Access to the waterfall point involves a short journey through plantations and small forests, providing a light trekking experience suitable for beginners.

Best Time to Visit

To get the maximum experience, a visit to SKPC Waterfall should be made at the end of the rainy season or the beginning of the dry season (around March to June). During this period, the water flow is abundant, making the waterfall look very majestic, yet the water remains clear.

At the peak of the rainy season, the water flow can be very large and brownish due to sediment carried from upstream, which sometimes makes swimming less safe. Conversely, at the peak of a long dry season, the water flow may decrease, although its clarity will be at its maximum. It is recommended to arrive at the location in the morning around 08:00 WIB to enjoy the still very pure air and sunlight filtering through the gaps in the trees (ray of light).

Conservation and Environmental Protection

As part of Aceh's natural wealth, the sustainability of SKPC Waterfall greatly depends on visitor awareness and local community management. Conservation efforts are focused on protecting the river basin (DAS) from domestic waste pollution. Tourists are strongly urged to apply the Leave No Trace principle.

Subulussalam City Government, along with local tourism awareness groups (Pokdarwis), continues to strive to preserve the natural authenticity of the location by limiting excessive concrete construction near the waterfall's drop point, to maintain natural aesthetics and prevent soil erosion.

Accessibility and Supporting Facilities

SKPC Waterfall is located in Penuntungan Village, Penanggalan District, Subulussalam City. Its location is quite strategic as it is only about a 15-20 minute drive from the center of Subulussalam City by motorized vehicle. The road to the location is in good condition and accessible by car or motorcycle.

Some facilities that have been available in this area include:

  • Parking Area: There is a parking lot managed by the local community.
  • Gazebos and Rest Areas: Several simple wooden huts are built for shelter.
  • Restrooms and Changing Rooms: Basic facilities for changing clothes after swimming.
  • Local Stalls: Around the entrance area, there are vendors selling food and light drinks, serving Aceh's signature coffee and local snacks.

Although facilities are continuously being developed, the pristine aura of SKPC Waterfall remains preserved. This destination is a perfect choice for those who want to explore another side of Aceh that is green, cool, and calming. Spending time at SKPC Waterfall is not just traveling, but a journey to reconnect with the pure universe.
