About

Volcanic Landscape and Conservation Forest

Geographically, Moyo Island has a unique topography with an elevation reaching 648 meters above sea level. Most of its 30,000-hectare area is a conservation zone managed as the Moyo Buru National Park. The landscape is dominated by hills covered by deciduous forests and dense tropical rainforests.

One of the most iconic natural features is the presence of hidden tiered waterfalls in the middle of the forest. Mata Jitu Waterfall, often dubbed the "Queen Waterfall," boasts stalactite and stalagmite formations that have formed over thousands of years on its cascading walls. Its crystal-clear turquoise water flows through natural pools formed by limestone deposits, creating a fairytale-like scenery. Besides Mata Jitu, there is also Diwu Mba’i Waterfall, which offers an experience of swinging from tree vines like in an adventure movie before plunging into its deep pool.

Preserved Ecosystem and Biodiversity

Moyo Island is a last bastion for various endemic species. The island's forests are home to Timor deer (Cervus timorensis), wild boars, and long-tailed macaques. For birdwatchers, Moyo is a paradise as it is home to the rare yellow-crested cockatoo, megapodes, and sea eagles.

This biodiversity richness does not stop on land. The waters surrounding Moyo Island are encircled by very healthy coral reefs. Due to its status as a marine national park area, its underwater ecosystem is protected from destructive fishing practices. You can find vast expanses of soft and hard corals that are home to green turtles, blacktip sharks, and thousands of colorful coral fish species just a few meters from the coastline.

Outdoor Activities and Exclusive Experiences

Moyo Island offers a wide spectrum of activities, from jungle exploration to underwater adventures:

1. Jungle Trekking and Safaris: Exploring the trails into the island's interior allows visitors to see wildlife in their natural habitat. The journey to Mata Jitu Waterfall is often done using local motorcycle taxis through challenging dirt roads, providing a unique sense of adventure.

2. Snorkeling and Diving: Spots like Takal Sagele offer spectacular underwater views. Takal Sagele is a coral mound in the middle of the sea that becomes visible during low tide, where underwater visibility can reach 20-30 meters.

3. Beach Tours: The beaches on Moyo, such as Tanjung Pasir Beach and Ai Manis Beach, feature fine white sand with sea gradients from light blue to dark blue. These beaches are very secluded, offering a "private beach" experience for every visitor.

Best Time to Visit

The best time to visit Moyo Island is during the Dry Season (April to October). During this period, rainfall is very low, making the forest trekking trails dry and safe to traverse. Additionally, sea conditions tend to be calm with maximum underwater visibility, ideal for diving and snorkeling activities.

Conversely, during the rainy season (December to March), access to the waterfalls can become very slippery and muddy. However, for photography enthusiasts, the rainy season offers very green forest scenery and larger, more majestic waterfall flows.

Conservation Status and Environmental Protection

As a National Park area, Moyo Island is under the strict supervision of the Natural Resources Conservation Center (BKSDA). Environmental protection here involves the active participation of local village communities, such as Labuan Aji Village and Sebotok Village. Tourists are required to adhere to strict rules, such as prohibiting the taking of coral, not feeding wildlife, and strict waste management to maintain the integrity of the island's fragile ecosystem.

The presence of world-class eco-friendly resorts like Amanwana also contributes to conservation efforts through turtle protection programs and coral reef rehabilitation. This demonstrates that high-end tourism can go hand-in-hand with sustainable nature preservation.

Accessibility and Facilities

Reaching Moyo Island requires a little extra effort, which in turn preserves the authenticity of the place. The journey usually begins from Sumbawa Besar City. From local ports like Muara Kali or Goa Beach, visitors can rent a wooden fishing boat (public boat) or a private speedboat. The sea journey takes about 45 minutes to 2 hours, depending on the type of boat and weather conditions.

Facilities on the island are divided into two spectrums. On one hand, there are international-standard luxury accommodations (glamping) offering complete privacy. On the other hand, in local villages like Labuan Aji, there are simple yet clean local homestays, providing opportunities for tourists to interact directly with Sumbawa's local culture. Public facilities such as electricity and mobile signal are still limited, but this adds to Moyo Island's charm as a place for a "digital detox" and reconnecting with nature.

Moyo Island is a tangible proof that the purest natural beauty is found in places that still uphold the principle of ecosystem balance. A visit here is not just a holiday, but a spiritual journey to appreciate Indonesia's extraordinary natural heritage.
