Exploring the Hidden Charm of Mandin Damar Waterfall: Tanah Bumbu's Green Gem

Tanah Bumbu Regency in South Kalimantan is not only known as a mining industry center but also holds extraordinary ecological wealth behind the dense Meratus tropical forests. One of the destinations that represents the purity of Borneo's nature is Mandin Damar Waterfall. Located in Gunung Raya Village, Mantewe District, this destination offers a symphony of nature that combines the roar of water, dense rainforest vegetation, and a pristine mountain ecosystem.

Landscape and Geological Characteristics

Mandin Damar Waterfall is not just an ordinary water flow. Visually, this waterfall has a majestic characteristic with a height of about 10 to 15 meters and a considerable water span, reaching about 15-20 meters. The most striking feature of Mandin Damar is its rock wall structure. The water flows down through a black and sturdy andesite rock cliff, creating a dramatic color contrast with the clear white foam of the water.

Below its cascade, there is a large natural pool with varying depths. The clarity of the water at Mandin Damar is greatly influenced by its upstream location, so the flowing water feels very cold and fresh, free from the sediment pollution usually found downstream of Kalimantan rivers. The bottom of the pool consists of smooth river stones and natural gravel, providing a stable footing for swimmers.

Biodiversity and Rainforest Ecosystem

Mandin Damar is located in an area that is part of the foothills of the Meratus Mountains. The surrounding ecosystem is a highland dipterocarp rainforest, which is home to endemic flora and fauna. Along the journey to the location, visitors will be greeted by rows of giant trees such as Meranti, Ulin, and of course the Damar tree, which is the origin of the waterfall's name.

The uniqueness of the ecosystem here is marked by the abundance of epiphytic plants. Forest orchids are often seen clinging to the branches of old trees, while thick green moss covers the rocks around the water flow, creating a magical "moss forest" atmosphere. If lucky, visitors can hear the screeching of the Siamang (Hylobates albibarbis) or see hornbills flying through the treetops. The presence of exotic insects like the Troides helena butterfly with its contrasting yellow and black colors also often adorns the area around the waterfall.

Tourist Experience and Outdoor Activities

For adventure lovers, Mandin Damar offers a holistic experience. The main activity here is, of course, swimming and playing in the main pool. The water flow falling from a height provides a natural massage sensation (hydrotherapy) for those standing under the cascade.

Besides swimming, trekking is an inseparable part of visiting Mandin Damar. The path to the waterfall requires good physical condition as it involves traversing the forest and descending quite steep slopes. However, the fatigue will be rewarded with untouched natural scenery. For nature photographers, Mandin Damar is a perfect subject. Long exposure techniques on the wide water flow produce aesthetic photos, especially when sunlight penetrates the gaps in the forest canopy in the morning (ray of light).

Camping is also a favorite activity. There are several flat areas around the river that can be used to set up tents. Spending the night in the middle of the forest with the sound of Mandin Damar's water gurgling provides a deep healing experience, far from the city's noise.

Accessibility and Travel Challenges

Reaching Mandin Damar Waterfall requires thorough preparation. From the city center of Batulicin, the capital of Tanah Bumbu, the land journey to Mantewe District takes about 1.5 to 2 hours. The real challenge begins upon entering the Gunung Raya Village area. The roads are dominated by dirt and rocky terrain (off-road), so it is highly recommended to use a trail-type two-wheeled vehicle or a four-wheel-drive (4WD) vehicle.

After reaching the last vehicle stopping point, visitors must continue by walking (trekking) for approximately 20-30 minutes. This trail can be very slippery during the rainy season, so using hiking shoes with strong grip is highly recommended. The lack of directional signs makes using the services of local guides from the villagers highly recommended for safety.

Best Time to Visit

The best time to visit Mandin Damar is at the end of the rainy season or the beginning of the dry season (around May to July). During this period, the water discharge is still quite large, making the waterfall look majestic, but the water remains clear and not murky due to reduced rainfall intensity. If you visit at the peak of the dry season, the water discharge may decrease slightly, but the natural pool will become very calm and a beautiful greenish-blue color.

It is strongly advised not to visit during periods of very high rainfall due to the risk of flash floods and trekking paths becoming very dangerous due to landslides or fallen trees.

Conservation and Facilities

As a destination that is still very natural, facilities at Mandin Damar are still limited. There are no permanent toilets or food stalls at the waterfall point. This is actually an advantage for its natural preservation, as it limits the accumulation of plastic waste. Visitors are required to bring back all their trash (Zero Waste Policy).

Conservation awareness is highly emphasized here. Local communities and nature lover communities in Tanah Bumbu are continuously striving to ensure that this area is not damaged by land clearing activities. Its status as a protected forest ensures that the biodiversity around Mandin Damar is preserved as the lungs of the world and a source of clean water for the villages below.

Mandin Damar Waterfall is not just a tourist spot, but a reminder of the greatness of Kalimantan's nature. A visit here is a nature pilgrimage that demands respect for the environment, while also offering a reward of peace of mind that is hard to find elsewhere.
