The Charm of Oeluan: A Green Oasis and Pure Spring Water in the Heart of North Central Timor
North Central Timor Regency (TTU) in East Nusa Tenggara is often identified with its dry and scorching savanna hilly landscape. However, behind this arid image lies a refreshing green gem named Oeluan. Located in Bijeli Village, Noemuti District, Oeluan is not just an ordinary tourist destination; it is the lungs and the source of life, offering an extraordinary contrast to the semi-arid climate of Timor Island.

Oeluan's Hydrological Wonders and Protected Forest
The main characteristic that distinguishes Oeluan from other destinations in NTT is the presence of its natural springs that never dry up, even at the peak of the dry season. The name "Oeluan" itself comes from the Dawan language (the local Timor language), where Oe means water and Luan means place or container. Literally, Oeluan is a water reservoir.
This site is under the protection of dense protected forest vegetation. Giant banyan trees (Ficus), walnut trees, and various other dry tropical forest tree species grow tall, creating a natural canopy that shields the area from the Timor sun. The large roots that twist on the ground surface act as natural sponges, absorbing and storing rainwater, which then flows through limestone (karst) crevices to become clear, cool springs.

Preserved Ecosystem and Biodiversity
Unlike the coastal areas of Timor dominated by mangroves or the hills dominated by acacia, Oeluan presents a unique lowland rainforest ecosystem. The high humidity within this tourist area supports the growth of epiphytes such as ferns and several types of forest orchids rarely found in open areas.
The fauna biodiversity in Oeluan is also a special attraction for birdwatchers. If lucky, visitors can hear the chirping of the Yellow-breasted Racket-tail or see the flapping wings of the Timor Sparrowhawk nesting in the high tree canopies. The presence of colorful butterflies fluttering around the water source is a biological indicator that Oeluan's ecosystem is still in very healthy and minimally polluted condition.

Tourist Experience and Outdoor Activities
The main attraction for tourists in Oeluan is its natural bathing complex. Water from the springs flows into several tiered pools. These pools are designed in such a way that the water continuously flows (natural circulation), maintaining its freshness and cleanliness without the need for many chemical additives. The sensation of swimming in cool water with a view of ancient trees all around provides a deeply relaxing experience.
For those who enjoy physical activities, Oeluan offers light trekking trails through the forest. Visitors can walk along the uphill paths leading to the hill behind the bathing area. From the height, the contrast between the greenness of the Oeluan area and the surrounding savanna hills is visible. Another popular activity is nature photography, where the sunlight filtering through the leaves (ray of light) creates a magical and very photogenic atmosphere.

Facilities and Accessibility
The North Central Timor Regency government has developed Oeluan with adequate facilities without damaging its natural essence. There are gazebos or lopo-lopo (traditional Timor houses) provided for visitors to rest and enjoy their packed meals under the shade of the trees. In addition, basic facilities such as changing rooms, toilets, and parking areas are available on site.
Access to Oeluan is quite easy. This destination is located right on the edge of the Trans Timor highway connecting Kupang City with Atambua City. From Kefamenanu, the capital of TTU Regency, the journey takes only about 15 to 20 minutes by motorized vehicle. Its very strategic location makes Oeluan a favorite stopover for travelers making land journeys across Timor Island.

Best Time to Visit
Although Oeluan can be visited year-round, the best time to experience its magic is during the transition period from the rainy season to the dry season (April to June). During this period, the water flow is abundant, and the forest vegetation appears very green and fresh.
If visiting during the long dry season (August to October), visitors will experience a different sensation. While the areas outside Oeluan turn yellowish-brown and arid, Oeluan remains a cool green oasis, making it a perfect escape from NTT's air temperatures which can reach 35 degrees Celsius.

Conservation Efforts and Environmental Protection
As a protected forest area and a source of clean water for the surrounding community, the preservation of Oeluan is a top priority. The local community and the local government work together in maintaining the beauty of this forest through local wisdom. There is an unwritten rule not to cut down trees or pollute the springs, as the water from Oeluan is also used to irrigate agricultural land downstream.
Environmental protection efforts here include regular cleaning of the pool area and limiting the construction of permanent structures that could disrupt water infiltration. Visitors are strongly urged not to leave plastic waste and to maintain quietness so as not to disturb the habitat of the wild fauna present.

Conclusion: A Soul-Soothing Oasis
Oeluan is a tangible testament to the geological and biological richness of East Nusa Tenggara. It is not just a swimming pool, but a symphony of nature where water, trees, and clean air unite. For tourists seeking tranquility from the hustle and bustle of the city, or for those who want to see another side of the lush and cool Timor Island, Oeluan is a must-visit destination. Its authentic natural beauty serves as an important reminder to all of us about the crucial importance of preserving forests as life support systems in dry island regions.
