On the land side, visitors will be greeted by a vast expanse of savannah. During the dry season, this savannah transforms into a dry golden expanse, creating an atmosphere similar to the grasslands of Africa. However, when the rainy season arrives, the entire area turns into a refreshing green carpet. The presence of tall lontar palm trees (Borassus flabellifer) scattered among the hills is a distinctive feature of the local vegetation, adding to the exoticism of the North Central Timor landscape.

In addition to marine life, the land of Tanjung Bastian is also a habitat for local fauna. It is not uncommon for visitors to see herds of cattle or horses belonging to local residents grazing freely in the savannah. The interaction between livestock and wildlife creates a unique pastoral ecosystem dynamic. Endemic birds of NTT are also often seen flying among the mangrove trees and coral cliffs, making it an interesting location for birdwatching.

Outdoor Activities and Tourist Experience

Tanjung Bastian offers a wide spectrum of activities, from relaxation to extreme sports. One of the most nationally recognized main attractions is the traditional horse racing. This area has a horse racing track located right on the edge of the beach. Watching the thundering hooves on the sand against the backdrop of crashing waves is an experience not found elsewhere.

For those who enjoy water activities, swimming on the shores of Tanjung Bastian is relatively safe due to its calm waves during certain seasons. The clarity of the water also invites snorkeling enthusiasts to explore its underwater gardens. Furthermore, trekking to the top of the hills around the cape is a must-do activity. From the height, visitors can enjoy a 360-degree panorama showcasing the Wini coastline all the way to the border with Timor Leste, which is indeed very close.

For photographers, Tanjung Bastian is a perfect natural studio. The sunset moments here are iconic, where the sun seems to set directly behind the meeting line of cliffs and the sea, casting an orange glow that reflects on the savannah.

Best Time to Visit and Seasonal Variations

Understanding the seasonal cycle in NTT is crucial before visiting Tanjung Bastian. NTT has a considerably long dry season. If you want to see the exotic "Golden Savanna" scenery with a clear blue sky, come between June and September. However, if you prefer lush green landscapes, January to March is the right time, although rainfall might slightly hinder outdoor activities.

It is highly recommended to arrive at the location in the morning before the sun gets too hot, or in the afternoon around 4:00 PM WITA to enjoy the twilight atmosphere. If you are lucky, you can schedule your visit during the horse racing festival, which is usually an annual agenda for the local government.

Conservation Efforts and Environmental Protection

As a destination that relies on natural purity, Tanjung Bastian faces challenges in maintaining ecosystem balance. The North Central Timor Regency government continuously strives for development without damaging the original natural landscape. Protection of coral reefs from environmentally unfriendly fishing practices is a priority.

Tourists are strongly encouraged to practice Green Tourism, by not littering plastic waste on the beach or savannah, and by not damaging coral rock formations. Awareness of maintaining cleanliness is crucial, considering Tanjung Bastian is a natural heritage asset that forms the identity of the TTU community.

Accessibility and Supporting Facilities

Tanjung Bastian is located approximately 65 kilometers from Kefamenanu, the capital of North Central Timor Regency. The land journey can be completed in about 1.5 to 2 hours. The road access to the location is generally good and paved, passing through hilly routes that offer beautiful valley views.

In the tourist area, basic facilities such as lopo-lopo (traditional Timorese houses functioning as resting places), a spacious parking area, and several small kiosks managed by the local community are available. Although star-rated accommodation facilities are not yet available right on the beachfront, visitors can find various accommodation options in the Wini area, which is only a few minutes away from the cape. The Wini area itself is a strategic location because it houses the grand Wini Cross-Border Post (PLBN), which is often included in the tour package for tourists visiting Tanjung Bastian.
