About
Geological Characteristics and the Uniqueness of Tompaluan Crater
One of the most striking features that distinguishes Mount Lokon from other mountains in Indonesia is the location of its volcanic activity center. Instead of being at the highest peak, Mount Lokon's active crater, known as Tompaluan Crater, is situated in the saddle between the foot of Mount Lokon and the foot of Mount Empung.
Tompaluan Crater offers a surreal view. From the crater rim, visitors can witness plumes of sulfurous smoke rising from the earth's core, contrasting with the grayish and yellowish rocky walls colored by sulfur deposits. A low rumbling sound from the magma activity beneath the ground is often heard, serving as a reminder of nature's immense power. The crater's structure is highly dynamic, frequently changing shape after small eruptions, making it a natural laboratory for volcanology observers.
Highland Ecosystem and Biodiversity
The trek up Mount Lokon takes visitors through various interesting vegetation zones. In the lower parts, the hiking trail is dominated by fertile local plantations, growing various types of vegetables and flowers—given that Tomohon is known as the "Flower City." As you ascend higher, the vegetation transforms into dense lower montane forests.
Along the trail, visitors can encounter various endemic flora and tropical plants. One of the most unique is the expanse of tall grass and shrubs growing around old lava flows. This ecosystem serves as a habitat for various mountain bird species and insects rarely found in lowlands. The cool air, with an average temperature of 18–22 degrees Celsius, supports the growth of mosses and forest ferns, lending a lush green impression amidst the volcanic rocks.
Outdoor Experience: Hiking the Lava Flow Trail
The primary activity at Mount Lokon is, of course, hiking. However, the hiking experience here is quite specific. Instead of traversing a well-trodden path through dense forest for the entire duration, the Mount Lokon hiking trail largely follows lava flow paths or dry riverbeds formed from past eruptions.
This trail consists of piles of large rocks and volcanic sand, providing a unique physical challenge for hikers. The open terrain allows hikers to continuously enjoy views of Tomohon city, Lake Tondano, and Mount Klabat in the distance without obstruction from trees. The journey to Tompaluan Crater typically takes about 1 to 2 hours, depending on physical condition. For those aiming to reach the true summit of Mount Lokon (Lokon Peak), the terrain becomes much more challenging with steep inclines and denser vegetation.
Best Time to Visit
The beauty of Mount Lokon is highly dependent on weather conditions and its volcanic activity status. The best time to visit is during the dry season, between June and September. During this period, the hiking trails tend to be dry and not slippery, and visibility towards the crater and the city below is very clear without being obscured by thick fog.
It is highly recommended to start the hike in the early morning, around 05:00 WITA. Besides avoiding the scorching sun on the open trail, hikers have the chance to witness a stunning sunrise from the mountain slopes. The golden light illuminating the Tomohon valley provides a magical view. However, before visiting, tourists must check the volcano's activity status through the Center for Volcanology and Geological Hazard Mitigation (PVMBG), as hiking will be completely closed if the mountain's status increases above normal level.
Conservation and Environmental Protection
As a crucial active volcano for the local ecosystem, the preservation of Mount Lokon is a primary concern. This area functions as an important water catchment for Tomohon and its surroundings. Conservation efforts focus on protecting the vegetation on the mountain slopes to prevent erosion and landslides, especially considering the crumbly nature of volcanic soil.
Tourists are reminded to practice the "Leave No Trace" principle. Bringing back trash, refraining from vandalizing crater rocks, and not picking endemic plants are mandatory protocols. Safety awareness is also part of self-protection, as sulfurous gases in the crater can be toxic if inhaled in high concentrations or when wind direction is unpredictable.
Accessibility and Supporting Facilities
Mount Lokon has excellent accessibility compared to other mountains in North Sulawesi. From Manado City, the journey to Tomohon takes only about 1 hour by motorized vehicle. The starting point for the hike usually begins from Kakaskasen III Village.
Facilities around the foot of the mountain are quite adequate. There is a vehicle parking area, several local food stalls, and local guide services, which are highly recommended for beginner hikers. Due to its proximity to the center of Tomohon city, tourists do not need to worry about accommodation; there are various options ranging from simple homestays to luxury resorts with direct views of the mountain.
Exploring Mount Lokon is a journey that combines geological education, natural tranquility, and physical challenge. The unique lava flow trails and the wonders of the active Tompaluan Crater make it an unforgettable destination for every nature lover who sets foot on Minahasa land. By continuing to respect nature's power and maintaining environmental cleanliness, the beauty of Mount Lokon will be preserved for future generations.
