The most striking characteristic of this lake is the presence of 21 small islands scattered in its center, such as Asei Island and Ajapo Island.

The topography around the lake is dominated by vast savanna hills. One of the most iconic viewpoints is Tungku Wiri Hill, or more popularly known as Teletubbies Hill. From here, visitors can see the contours of green hills jutting into the calm blue waters, creating a dramatic color contrast between emerald green and sky blue.

The climate in Jayapura tends to be tropical wet, but the best time to visit Sentani Lake is during the dry season, between June and October. During this period, the sky is usually clear, providing maximum visibility to see the peaks of the Cyclops Mountains.

Specifically, August is the most special time as it usually hosts the Sentani Lake Festival (FDS). This festival features parades of dances on boats, rowing competitions, and large-scale cultural exhibitions that transform the lake's surface into a giant art stage.

As a nature reserve area, Sentani Lake and the Cyclops Mountains face significant environmental challenges. The conservation status of this region is crucial for maintaining clean water availability for the residents of Jayapura. Current protection efforts are focused on reforesting the slopes of Cyclops to prevent excessive sedimentation that could shallow the lake.

Indigenous communities play an important role in conservation through local wisdom. The "Sasi" system, or the prohibition of harvesting certain natural resources for a specific period, is often implemented to ensure fish populations and the sustainability of sago forests are maintained.
