About

Geological Characteristics and Natural Uniqueness

Riam Merasap Waterfall stands at a height of approximately 20 meters with a width reaching 8 meters. These numbers might sound standard, but its main attraction lies in the immense and constant volume of water throughout the year. The name "Merasap" itself originates from a physical phenomenon occurring at this location: the strong flow of water hitting the rocks below creates fine water spray that shoots high into the air, resembling smoke or white mist enveloping the area around the waterfall.

Geologically, Riam Merasap is formed from a river fault surrounded by sturdy basalt rock cliffs. This rock formation provides a beautiful color contrast—the jet-black wet rocks juxtaposed with the white foam of the water falling with extraordinary force. The echoing sound of the falling water can be heard from a distance, creating a magical sensation even before visitors see its physical form.

Tropical Forest Ecosystem and Biodiversity

Situated within the tropical rainforest area of Landak Regency, Riam Merasap is part of a rich ecosystem. The vegetation surrounding the waterfall is dominated by Kalimantan's characteristic giant trees like Meranti and various types of epiphytic plants. Tree roots sprawling across the river cliffs create an exotic landscape, as if nature is embracing the flow of water.

The biodiversity in this area is still very well-preserved. If lucky, visitors can spot various species of forest birds with colorful plumage, as well as endemic Kalimantan butterflies fluttering among the undergrowth. The high humidity around the waterfall also supports the growth of rare mosses and ferns, creating a natural hanging garden clinging to the damp rock walls.

Outdoor Experience and Activities

Riam Merasap is not just a destination to be admired, but also to be enjoyed through various challenging outdoor activities:

1. Nature Photography: With the backdrop of water mist (smoke) and rainbows that often appear when sunlight refracts through water droplets in the morning, this place is a paradise for landscape photographers.

2. River Exploration: At the base of the waterfall, there is a large natural pool. Although the current at the center of the falling water is very strong, the areas along the riverbanks are calmer and can be used to simply soak your feet while enjoying the coolness of pure mountain water.

3. Religious and Cultural Tourism: Near the waterfall area, there is a Grotto of Mary which is often visited for pilgrimage. The combination of nature and religious tourism offers a unique dimension of experience for visitors seeking inner peace.

4. Camping: For true nature lovers, setting up a tent around the area (with management permission) provides an opportunity to experience the symphony of nature at night, under the canopy of Kalimantan's star-filled sky.

Best Time to Visit

To get the best visual experience, the most recommended time is at the end of the rainy season or the beginning of the dry season (around May to July). During this period, the water discharge is abundant, making the "smoke" or water mist effect appear very clear and majestic.

Avoid visiting right at the peak of the extreme rainy season, as the water discharge can become too large and dangerous, and the water color might turn brownish due to sediment carried from upstream. Mornings before 10:00 AM are golden hours, where sunlight entering through the gaps in the trees often creates an eternal rainbow phenomenon at the base of the waterfall.

Accessibility and Facilities

Reaching Riam Merasap requires an adventurous spirit. From Pontianak City, the land journey takes about 6 to 7 hours to Sanggau Ledo District (border of Landak and Bengkayang). Although the journey is quite long, the views of hills and plantations along the way provide their own entertainment.

Facilities around the tourist attraction have been improved. There are walking paths that facilitate access from the parking area to the main viewpoint. Local stalls serving snacks and warm drinks are available in the outer area, giving visitors the opportunity to taste local cuisine while resting. A spacious parking area and public toilets are also available to support tourist comfort.

Conservation and Environmental Protection

As part of West Kalimantan's natural wealth, the preservation of Riam Merasap is a top priority. This area is an important water source for the surrounding community. Its status as a natural tourist destination demands high awareness from visitors to not litter and not damage the vegetation around the cliffs.

Environmental protection efforts are carried out by the local community and the regional government by maintaining the protected forest in the upstream area of the river. Without a healthy upstream forest, the water discharge of Riam Merasap could be threatened in the future. Tourists are strongly encouraged to apply the "Leave No Trace" principle to ensure the beauty of Riam Merasap remains eternal for future generations.

Riam Merasap is not just a tourist object; it is a symbol of the strength and gentleness of Kalimantan's nature. Its roaring sound is a reminder of the Creator's greatness, while its water mist is a gentle touch that refreshes a tired soul. Visiting Riam Merasap in Landak is a journey to reconnect with pure and wild nature.
