About
Geographical Characteristics and Landscape
Temajuk Beach has a very diverse beach typology. At some points, visitors will be greeted by vast, gently sloping stretches of white sand, especially during low tide. This expanse of sand can reach hundreds of meters towards the sea, creating a natural mirror that reflects the sky like a giant looking glass.
However, the main attraction that distinguishes it from other beaches in West Kalimantan is the presence of granite rock clusters. In the area known as Batu Pipih or Dermaga Camar Bulan, giant granite boulders are scattered along the shoreline and extend into the water. These rock formations create natural labyrinths and clear tidal pools, offering a contrasting view against the backdrop of green hills stretching along the coastline.
Unique Ecosystem and Biodiversity
Ecologically, Temajuk Beach is a crucial area. This region is one of the most important sea turtle nesting sites in Kalimantan. Two main species of sea turtles frequently land here: the Green Turtle (Chelonia mydas) and the Hawksbill Turtle (Eretmochelys imbricata). Their presence indicates that the environmental quality and water clarity in Temajuk are still in prime condition.
Besides marine fauna, the vegetation around the beach is dominated by coconut trees, sea pines, and mangrove forests in several small river estuaries. On the land side, there is secondary forest that is home to various endemic bird species and primates such as the Proboscis Monkey (Nasalis larvatus), which can sometimes be seen in the forest areas directly bordering the beach. This pristine ecosystem provides an authentic "back to nature" experience for every visitor.
Outdoor Activities and Tourist Experience
Temajuk Beach offers a wide spectrum of outdoor activities for adventurers:
1. Turtle Watching: At night, visitors can join conservation tours to witness sea turtles nesting. This is a strictly regulated educational experience to ensure no disturbance to the turtles' natural cycle.
2. Surfing and Water Sports: During certain seasons, the waves at Temajuk Beach are challenging enough for surfing. Ocean currents originating from the South China Sea provide consistent wave power.
3. Island Hopping and Snorkeling: Not far from the shore, there are small islands like Pulau Keramat that offer underwater beauty. The coral reefs around these islands are home to various ornamental fish and other marine life.
4. Landscape and Sunset Photography: Due to its westward orientation, Temajuk is one of the best locations in West Kalimantan to enjoy the sunset. The gradation of sky colors reflecting on the wet sand and the silhouettes of granite rocks create spectacular photographic compositions.
5. Cross-Border Tourism: Given its border location, visitors can visit the national border marker and observe the life of the community in Dusun Camar Bulan, which directly borders Kampung Melano, Malaysia.
Best Time to Visit
Understanding the seasons is key when planning a trip to Temajuk. The best time to visit is between April and September. During this period, the weather tends to be clear, the sea is calmer and clearer (ideal for snorkeling), and the land access roads are safer to travel.
Conversely, from October to February, the region enters the monsoon season. Sea waves can be very high, and strong winds are frequent. While this is the awaited time for surfers, for general tourists, these conditions might be less comfortable for beach activities and sea travel.
Conservation and Environmental Protection
Temajuk's status as a sea turtle conservation area makes environmental protection a top priority. The local government, along with the community, has formed a tourism driving group (Pokdarwis) responsible for maintaining beach cleanliness and monitoring turtle nesting areas. Visitors are strictly prohibited from lighting campfires in certain areas or using bright flashlights at night during the turtle nesting season, as this can disorient nesting turtles. Awareness of sustainable tourism is strongly emphasized here to ensure that natural beauty remains preserved for future generations.
Accessibility and Facilities
Reaching Temajuk Beach is an adventure in itself. From Pontianak City, the land journey takes approximately 10 to 12 hours. The route includes traveling to Sambas City, then continuing towards Paloh District. One of the most iconic parts of this journey is crossing the Sekura River by ferry.
Despite its remote location, the facilities in Temajuk Tourist Village are quite adequate. Various accommodation options are available, ranging from local homestays to unique beachfront resorts (such as upside-down house accommodations or villas with modern architecture). Basic facilities like eateries serving fresh seafood, convenience stores, and motorcycle rentals for exploring the long coastline are also available.
Temajuk Beach is a destination that offers a harmony of natural tranquility, rich biodiversity, and the warmth of local culture. For those seeking an escape from the hustle and bustle of urban life, exploring every inch of this white sand at the tip of Borneo will provide a new perspective on Indonesia's extraordinary natural wealth.
