Exploring the Heart of Borneo: The Charm of Bukit Baka Bukit Raya National Park

Taman Nasional Bukit Baka Bukit Raya (TNBBBR) is one of the last strongholds of mountainous tropical rainforest on the island of Borneo. Located on the border between Central Kalimantan and West Kalimantan Provinces, this area encompasses Gunung Mas Regency, which serves as one of the main entry points for adventurers. As part of the "Heart of Borneo" conservation area, this national park offers invaluable biodiversity, magnificent orographic scenery, and adrenaline-challenging nature tourism experiences.

The Grandeur of Topography and Natural Landscapes

As its name suggests, this national park is dominated by two main peaks: Bukit Baka (1,617 masl) in West Kalimantan and Bukit Raya (2,278 masl) in Central Kalimantan. Bukit Raya holds the title of the highest peak in Kalimantan within Indonesian territory (one of the Indonesian Seven Summits).

The landscape of TNBBBR consists of the Schwaner mountain range covered by kerangas forest, lowland dipterocarp forest, and moss forest at the peak altitudes. Clear rivers, such as the Katingan River and Senamang River, cut through steep valleys, creating challenging rapids and hidden waterfalls that have not been widely touched by mass tourism. This unique topography creates contrasting temperature gradients, from humid air at the foot of the mountain to biting cold temperatures as one approaches the summit of Bukit Raya.

Biodiversity: Home to Endemic Flora and Fauna

The biodiversity in TNBBBR is the main attraction for researchers and nature lovers. This forest is home to thousands of plant species, including the giant parasitic flower Rafflesia sp., which is often found blooming on hiking trails. In addition, there are various types of rare wild orchids and pitcher plants (Nepenthes) that thrive in the kerangas forest areas.

In terms of fauna, TNBBBR is a sanctuary for large mammals and primates. This area is the primary location for the rehabilitation and release program of Kalimantan Orangutans (Pongo pygmaeus). Here, lucky visitors can see orangutans living freely in their natural habitat. Besides orangutans, the area is inhabited by gibbons, sun bears, clouded leopards, and over 200 species of birds, including the Rhinoceros Hornbill, which is a sacred symbol for the Dayak people.

Outdoor Activities and Tourism Experiences

Visiting Bukit Baka Bukit Raya National Park is not just an ordinary holiday, but an expedition. Some of the main activities that can be undertaken include:

1. Climbing Bukit Raya: The trekking route to the highest peak in Kalimantan is known as one of the most difficult routes in Indonesia due to its long terrain and dense vegetation. The climb usually takes 5 to 8 days round trip, demanding excellent physical fitness and a strong mental fortitude.

2. Wildlife Observation (Birdwatching): With its high avifauna diversity, TNBBBR is a paradise for birdwatchers. The chirping sounds of hornbills and barbets often break the morning forest silence.

3. Cultural Tourism and Local Wisdom: Around the area, especially on the access route through Gunung Mas Regency, visitors can interact with the Dayak Limbai and Dayak Rungus communities. Their lives in harmony with nature, their traditional longhouses (rumah betang), and their customary ceremonies provide a spiritual dimension to the travel experience.

4. River Tubing and White Water Rafting: The rivers in this area have varied current characteristics, making them ideal for those who want to enjoy the sensation of navigating rivers in the middle of the wilderness.

Best Time to Visit

The best time to visit TNBBBR is during the dry season, which is between June and September. During this period, rainfall is relatively lower, making the hiking trails less slippery and reducing the risk of flash floods in the rivers. However, it should be remembered that as a tropical rainforest, rain can still occur at any time. For those who wish to see Rafflesia flowers bloom, it is advisable to coordinate with the national park authorities to find out the blooming period of these flowers.

Conservation and Environmental Protection

As a National Park area, TNBBBR has a strict protection status. The management of this area focuses on protecting the life support system, preserving the diversity of plant and animal species, and sustainable utilization. Visitors are required to adhere to the Leave No Trace principle.

The most prominent conservation program here is the orangutan reintroduction in cooperation with various international organizations. The protection of this area is crucial because TNBBBR functions as a water tower for the major river systems in Central and West Kalimantan.

Accessibility and Facilities

Access to TNBBBR from the Central Kalimantan side usually starts from Palangka Raya to Kuala Kurun in Gunung Mas Regency, followed by land and river travel to buffer villages such as Tumbang Tosah Village or Tumbang Yuhu Village. This journey often requires 4x4 vehicles and longboats (motorized boats) due to the challenging terrain.

Facilities within the area are very limited to preserve the natural authenticity. There are several trekking posts (shelters) and simple guest houses in the entrance villages. Tourists are strongly advised to use the services of local guides and porters from the local community. Using local services not only aids navigation in the dense forest but also directly contributes to the economy of the village communities around the area.
